Which Historical Queen Are You?

Your result for The Which Historical Queen Are You Test...

Queen Victoria

You scored 52% on ruling power!

You are: Victoria, Queen of England, 1819-1901.
Queen Victoria's reign was the longest in English history. Called the Victorian age, it was a time when Britain was at the height of its colonial power. Victoria became a symbol of British expansionist foreign policy. She insisted on taking an active part in the decisions of the government, and forcefully backed those ministers she liked. She herself was most proud of her role as wife and mother - she had nine children. After the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert, she went into a period of deep depression, dropping out of public view for three years. Her popularity increased in her late years, particularly during time of national celebrations, like the Jubilees of 1887 and 1897.

A Golden Age by Tahmima Anam

Powerful

Rehana Haque is a widow with two children, Maya a strong willed 17 year-old girl and Soheil a 19 year-old boy who is also strong willed. As Rehana goes about her daily routine of cooking and caring for her children something is brewing in Bangladesh.

In March 1971, Rehana wakes up very excited one day, as she decided to throw her children a garden party and invite the neighbors. Rehana and her neighbor couldn’t have predicted that during the party a war would be starting. They hear loud noises and think perhaps it’s fireworks, but then realize that was wishful thinking.

In A Golden Age we see how one family copes during the Bangladesh War of Independence. With hope, passion, and heroism they help their neighbors and fellow man.

Tahmima Anam writes with poetic prose that makes her characters come alive. I felt as if I was living the war with them step by step. This is Anam’s first book and is to be the first in a trilogy. I can hardly wait for the next book to come out!

Very highly recommended!

Free Blogging Course

November 26, 2008 Update:
I have tried the first few lessions and it is not anything like I expected. I have decided that this is not for me and will not continue with it. It appears to be more of a life affirming course and hasn't even touched on the topics that were promised below. Also, the free part is just thirty days, after that you have to pay.

J. Kaye at J Kaye's Book Blog posted this on her blog. It looks interesting, so I decided to check it out.

Here is the information on it in case any of you are interested:

I'm evaluating a multi-media course on blogging from the folks at Simpleology. For a while, they're letting you snag it for free if you post about it on your blog.

It covers:

  • The best blogging techniques.
  • How to get traffic to your blog.
  • How to turn your blog into money.

I'll let you know what I think once I've had a chance to check it out. Meanwhile, go grab yours while it's still free.

I Heard It Through the Grapevine Challenge Complete

Thanks to Lynne at Lynne's Little Corner of the World for hosting this challenge!

The Challenge:

Read 3 books recommended by others, and you can read more if you like. Cross-challenges are OK and you can change your books at any time.

The three books I read:

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Mistress of the Sun by Sandra Gulland

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hoesseini

342,745 Ways To Herd Cats Challenge Complete

Thanks to Bottle of Shine for hosting this challenge!

The challenge:

1) Make a list of ten books you love.

2) Share the list by posting it on your blog and then give Bottle of Shine the link so she can add it to the master list.

2) Choose 3 books to read from the master list.

3) Write reviews of the books you read! 4) Share the links to your reviews for the challenge.

The three books I read for the challenge:

1. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

2. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

3. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hoesseini

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

An Epic

"Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan grow up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant, is a Hazara -- a shunned ethnic minority. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him." The Kite Runner Unabridged Audio Book (Back Cover)

Told in breath taking prose, this is an epic story of family, friendship, and redemption. Hosseini gives us a good sense of what Afghanistan was like both pre and post Taliban, the good, the bad, and the devastating.

Khaled Hosseini was the reader of this audio book. At first his reading seemed a bit choppy to me however within the first few chapters he spoke pitch perfect. I felt as if I was right there, in the story.

I saw the movie version first, which I liked a lot. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and see it. However, the even better treat, is this book! Highly recommended. I am looking forward to reading A Thousand Splendid Suns!

Family Values by Laurel-Rain Snow- An Amazon Short

Model of a Dysfunctional Family!

The story opens with a family sitting around the table for a big Thanksgiving meal. The father is sitting at the head of the table quietly shoveling in food, only grunting when spoken to. Skye’s children are like most normal children, running around the table giggling. Her eldest brother Irving is at the opposite end of the table and the rest of the family on the sides.

Skye hasn’t seen Irving for quite a long time and was really looking forward to seeing him. She planned to spend a few days there before heading back home to Fresno. Irving isn’t looking forward to spending time with Skye and her little "brats".

Writing a short story is a different kind of art then writing a novel. Not all writers can put the details just so, to make up a short story the feels complete. Snow shines at this!

In only 15 pages, Laurel-Rain Snow manages to make up a believable family with believable issues. This is a vivid exploration of childhood abuse and sibling rivalry.

I highly recommend this story.

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

What Lengths Should a Family Go to Save a Life?

Anna was conceived as a bone marrow donor for her sister Kate. Originally it was just going to be taken from the placenta but when that didn’t hold, Anna ended up being a long-term donor for Kate. By the age of 13, Anna had undergone several surgeries and transfusions. Now she is expected to donate a kidney to her sister. Now she will draw a line in the sand. She will fight this.

What length should parents and siblings’ go to save a family member’s life? What is ethical, moral, and legal? What is right for the person who has the disease? Picoult does not give us the answers but leads us through the journey of what one family, lawyers, and the courts go through. In the end, we must decide.

I like how the narrative of the story switches from character to character so that we can get inside what each person is thinking and feeling. Picoult also throws in a few twists and turns to keep the story and plot going.

Several people have recommended this book to me. I must admit I hesitated, blowing it off as "chick lit". Boy was I wrong. This story is not superficial fluff; it deals with deep ethical issues and is well written.

This is the first Jodi Picoult book I have read, but it is certainly not the last. I highly recommend My Sister’s Keeper!

In Celebration of the 44th U.S. President-Giveaway

Thanks to Anna at Hachette Book Group , I am hosting this giveaway in
celebration of the 44th U.S. President, Barack Obama.

The American Journey of Barack Obama by The Editors of LIFE Magazine

Book Description:

The American Journey of Barack Obama covers the candidate from his childhood and adolescence to his time as editor of The Harvard Law Review and his Chicago activist years, culminating with the excitement and fervor of the historic 2008 Democratic National Convention. The unfolding drama of Obama’s life and political career is cinematic in scope, and never has it been presented so compellingly.

In addition to a powerful array of photographs that were taken by many of the country’s greatest photographers (and some that were snapped, in the quiet moments, by Obama family members themselves), this book also includes a Foreword by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, an incisive narrative biography and original essays by some of our finest writers, including Gay Talese, Charles Johnson, Melissa Fay Greene, Andrei Codrescu, Fay Weldon, Richard Norton Smith, Bob Greene and several others. Many readers will find a new understanding of Obama. All readers will feel that they are bearing witness to a singular, undeniably American story.

Sorry, this Giveaway is only open to residents of the US and Canada. No PO Boxes.

Adoption Notice: It's a Girl

Amanda enjoying listening to music with her daddy.

Bill and I now have the pitter-patter of little feet once again. It has been too quite here without Robbie and Tina. We came to the decision that it was time to open our hearts up to someone else in need of a stable home and parents.

This is Amanda, in Latin her name means "worthy of love". That name describes her very well! She is such a sweet girl! We just have to get her to not chew through our computer headphones. LOL! Thank goodness she doesn't seem to enjoy electrical cords, or it could be shocking. (Pardon the pun!)

I swore that I wouldn't get another black cat, because Tina was black. Of course I got one look and Amanda and I melted.

Amanda is a Manx and therefore only has a little stub of a tail. Isn't she cute? I'm not prejudice at all, not me. LOL! She is about 1 year old. I was reading up on the breed and found out that Manx aren't fully matured until about 5 years. She loves to play and nap. She follows my husband and I around the house a lot. She is a very social girl.
