Giveaway: THE LOST DOG by Michelle de Kretser

Thanks to Valerie of Hachette Books I am giving away up to 5 copies of this book.

Book Description:

Tom Loxley, an Indian-Australian professor, is less concerned with finishing his book on Henry James than with finding his dog, who is lost in the Australian bush.

Joining his daily hunt is Nelly Zhang, an artist whose husband disappeared mysteriously years before Tom met her. Although Nelly helps him search for his beloved pet, Tom isn't sure if he should trust this new friend.

Tom has preoccupations other than his book and Nelly and his missing dog, mainly concerning his mother, who is suffering from the various indignities of old age. He is constantly drawn from the cerebral to the primitive--by his mother's infirmities, as well as by Nelly's attractions. THE LOST DOG makes brilliant use of the conventions of suspense and atmosphere while leading us to see anew the ever-present conflicts between our bodies and our minds, the present and the past, the primal and the civilized.

Giveaway: THE BLUE STAR by Tony Earley

Thanks to Valerie of Hachette Books I am giving away up to 5 copies of this book.

Book Description:

Seven years ago, readers everywhere fell in love with Jim Glass, the precocious ten-year-old at the heart of Tony Earley's bestseller Jim the Boy. Now a teenager, Jim returns in another tender and wise story of young love on the eve of World War Two.

Jim Glass has fallen in love, as only a teenage boy can fall in love, with his classmate Chrissie Steppe. Unfortunately, Chrissie is Bucky Bucklaw's girlfriend, and Bucky has joined the Navy on the eve of war. Jim vows to win Chrissie's heart in his absence, but the war makes high school less than a safe haven, and gives a young man's emotions a grown man's gravity.

With the uncanny insight into the well-intentioned heart that made Jim the Boy a favorite novel for thousands of readers, Tony Earley has fashioned another nuanced and unforgettable portrait of America in another time--making it again even realer than our own day.

This is a timeless and moving story of discovery, loss and growing up, proving why Tony Earley's writing "radiates with a largeness of heart" (Esquire).

Short Story Monday: From Far Away by Robert Munsch and Saoussan Askar, Art by Michael Martchenko

Saoussan use to live in a nice place but then a war started. She narrates and tell us her story.

When her family home was bombed, her father decided to come to Canada and get things ready for his family to follow. He sent the plane tickets and it took them two days of travel to get here. Poor Saoussan had air sickness the entire time.

She went to school but didn't know English. One day she went out into the hallway of the school to go to the washroom but she was greeted by a skeleton. She thought people were going to start shooting each other and she screamed. The teacher tried to explain that it was Halloween but Saoussan didn't understand.
Saoussan did learn to read, write, and speak English quickly. The next year, she even wore a mask for Halloween.

This was a fun book that is also educational. It helps explain how different children can come from different countries and have a few barriers at first, such as language. The art work was also top notch, which I have come to expect from Michael Martchenko. Highly recommended.

The Last Prince of the Mexican Empire by C.M. Mayo

Mexican History

I usually write my own summary of what a book is about. I am at a bit of a loss for this one. The book had so much going on with different sub-plots and character's that I have decided to use the publishers book description.

Book Description:

The Last Prince of the Mexican Empire is a sweeping historical novel of Mexico during the short, tragic, at times surreal, reign of Emperor Maximilian and his court. Even as the American Civil War raged north of the border, a clique of Mexican conservative exiles and clergy convinced Louis Napoleon to invade Mexico and install the Archduke of Austria, Maximilian von Habsburg, as Emperor. A year later, the childless Maximilian took custody of the two year old, half-American, Agustín de Iturbide y Green, making the toddler the Heir Presumptive. Maximilian’s reluctance to return the child to his distraught parents, even as his empire began to fall, and the Empress Carlota descended into madness, ignited an international scandal. It is based on the true story and illuminates both the cultural roots of Mexico and the political development of the Americas.

Historical fiction is my passion, however I have never read any based on Mexican history. In fact, I know very little about Mexican history so I was very excited when I got the chance to receive a review copy of this book!

C.M. Mayo is a gifted writer and kept Mexican history at the forefront of this novel, with some beautiful passages. However, I had trouble picking this book up. It's over 400 pages long and the list of characters didn't seem to end. I would just start to remember who a character was and then a new character was introduced. We never get to fully explore any one character which, made it very hard for me to maintain my interest in this book. Because of this, I think that it would have been better if Mayo would have written it as a non-fiction book.

I think that C.M. Mayo has very promising talent but needs to work on her character development and try to look at which characters are important to introduce, for a story's development.

Though this book was a difficult read for me, I am glad that I stuck with it. I did learn some Mexican history. I would recommend this book if you are interest in Mexican history. If you do decide to give it a read, here is a link to an outline of all of the characters. It helped me a bit in keeping track of who was who.

Drood by Dan Simmons-Audiobook

Charles Dickens and Wilkie Come Back to Life

The story of Drood is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens, "The Last Dickens." It is narrated by Wilkie Collins, author and friend of Charles Dickens.

The story opened on June 9, 1865 with a train accident at Staplehurst. Charles Dickens and his mistress were on the train. Dickens helped some of the other passengers and saw some die. It is also where he first set eyes on a creepy man, Drood.

Dickens becomes obsessed with Drood and with the help of laudanum addict, Wilkie Collins, they explore the dangerous underbelly of London to find him.

Let me begin by saying that this isn't the normal genre I read. It is historical fiction, yes but it is also horror/mystery. The reason I decided to listen to it was that it was historical fiction and based on two real classic novelists. I am attracted to historical books that have real life famous people in them as characters.

I really liked being able to experience 1860's London, warts and all. Dan Simmons transported me there, where Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins lived and worked. It was worth the listen just for that! The British actor Simon Prebble was the narrator and did a fine job. He even made the female characters pop with a tone of voice change.

The horror part I could have really done without. It was quite gruesome and reminded me of an old B horror movie. Though, again, let me remind you that it is not my genre and so it is probably just me. I also found the ending anticlimactic.

If you like historical fiction with real famous people, this book is worthwhile.

Short Story Monday: The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch and Michael Martchenko

Princess Elizabeth lived in a castle and was to marry Prince Ronald. He was a spoiled Prince. One day a dragon came and ruined the castle, burned all of Elizabeth's clothes, and took off with the Prince. Elizabeth makes a paper bag dress for herself to wear and goes to rescue her prince.

This is the 25 year edition full of how the story came to Robert Munsch and the real life Elizabeth who inspired the story. There was also a very interest biography on both Robert Munsch and Michael Martchenko. I enjoyed all the background information as much as the story.

This is a fun story with a twist at the end. The illustrations were beautiful. I want to thank Mr. Munsch for making the main character Princess Elizabeth a strong female with thoughts of her own. this is a must read, for little girls especially. Highly recommended!

Short Story Monday: Promise by Daniel Griffin

John of Book Mine Set reviewed this short last week, here. After reading his wonderful review, I just had to read this myself and I am so glad I did!

In its basic form, this story is about a dysfunctional family. As the story opens, Doug pulls up in his car, at his brother's house with his daughter Tracy. It looked like no one was home but his brother, Marshall opened the door.

Doug was there because his mother was worried. Marshall's wife or girl friend , Susan left him. There was talk of a restraining order and gun. Marshall denied the restraining order but the gun was right there in his house all taken a part for cleaning. Marshall told Doug that him and Susan were working it out but there was a lot of tension in the conversation. The two brothers saw each other about once a year, for Christmas. Resentment came out loud and clear.

Like John of Book Mine Set, my own family dynamics popped into my head well I was reading the story. I have three siblings. Two which I see once a year, when I'm lucky, because I moved away. To be honest, we weren't on the best of terms as it was and still aren't. My other brother lives here, in Vancouver and we get along really well.

I don't want to give any spoilers away but believe me when I say this story packs a punch and is disturbing. Daniel Griffin is obviously a master at his craft! I must read more by him. I highly recommend that you read this story! Here is the link: Promise.

If you would like to participate in Short Story Mondays or just find out about some great short stories, go to John of The Book Mine Set. He has a short story review every Monday and a place for you to link your short story reviews. Come join in the fun!

The Canadian Book Challenge 3

July 1, 2009- July 1, 2010
Thanks to John of The Book Mine Set for hosting this awesome challenge again!
You don't have to be Canadian to join! Come join the fun!
Here's what John says about the challenge:
From Canada Day to Canada Day, can you read and review at least 13 Canadian books?
Starting July 1st, 2009 and ending July 1st, 2010, I challenge Canadians and non-Canadians to read 13 or more Canadian books. Pick fiction, pick nonfiction, pick poetry, graphic novels, picture books, plays, etc-- if it's Canadian and if it's a book, it's in. What makes a book Canadian? Let's ask Doug Webster:
"A Canadian book is defined as a book written by Canadians and/or about Canadians.
"What makes a Canadian?"Canadian refers to someone born in or immigrated to Canada.
"But you know, Doug Webster isn't related to that other Webster. He's just some guy from Scarborough. Besides, this is your challenge. You decide which books make the cut and which ones don't.
Pick authors and books at random or theme your challenge should you be so inclined.

I am going to choose the random approach again. There are so many different Canadian books and authors on my TBR that I don't want to limit myself.

Here is a partial list of what I hope to read:
1.The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch
7.Fox on the Ice by Tomson Highway

8.People of the Buffalo by Maria Campbell
9.Grease Town by Ann Towell
10. The Summer Before the Storm by Gabriele Wills
11. Galore by Michael Crummey
12.When Stella Was Very, Very Small by Marie-Louise Gay
13. Chicken, Pig, Cow On the Move by Ruth Ohi
