Giveaway: The Lincoln Conspiracy by Timothy O'Brien

Thanks to Amy Bruno of Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for making this giveaway possible.

Book Description:

Publication Date:  September 18, 2012 | Ballantine Books | 368p

A nation shattered by its president’s murder. Two diaries that reveal the true scope of an American conspiracy. A detective determined to bring the truth to light, no matter what it costs him

From award-winning journalist Timothy L. O’Brien comes a gripping historical thriller that poses a provocative question: What if the plot to assassinate President Lincoln was wider and more sinister than we ever imagined?

In late spring of 1865, as America mourns the death of its leader, Washington, D.C., police detective Temple McFadden makes a startling discovery. Strapped to the body of a dead man at the B&O Railroad station are two diaries, two documents that together reveal the true depth of the Lincoln conspiracy. Securing the diaries will put Temple’s life in jeopardy—and will endanger the fragile peace of a nation still torn by war.

Temple’s quest to bring the conspirators to justice takes him on a perilous journey through the gaslit streets of the Civil War–era capital, into bawdy houses and back alleys where ruthless enemies await him in every shadowed corner. Aided by an underground network of friends—and by his wife, Fiona, a nurse who possesses a formidable arsenal of medicinal potions—Temple must stay one step ahead of Lafayette Baker, head of the Union Army’s spy service. Along the way, he’ll run from or rely on Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s fearsome secretary of war; the legendary Scottish spymaster Allan Pinkerton; abolitionist Sojourner Truth; the photographer Alexander Gardner; and many others.

Bristling with twists and building to a climax that will leave readers gasping, The Lincoln Conspiracy offers a riveting new account of what truly motivated the assassination of one of America’s most beloved presidents—and who participated in the plot to derail the train of liberty that Lincoln set in motion.

Giveaway & Review: The Adventures of Tilda Pinkerton by Angela Shelton

Book Description:
Publisher: Quiet Owl Books, July 31, 2012
Category: Children’s Literature, Fantasy
Tour Dates: November, 2012
Available in: Print, 272 pages
Somewhere out in the Sombrero Galaxy, Tilda Pinkerton–mystical maker of mysterious, magnificent, magical hats–is being hunted by the Keeper of Darkness.
Yet Tilda simply does not recall, at all, after taking a tremendous fall.
No one on Ooleeoo, where Tilda crash-landed, knows she is from another planet. Only Star Jumper Randy can tell her—but he’s light years away, frantically searching for his missing love, desperate that without her, the entire galaxy soon may be lost.
Even in the middle of cosmic danger, Tilda loves to create hats, for which she has a rare and uncanny knack. All who receive them sparkle, in fact—and spark their innermost talent. With a Tilda hat, people can suddenly do whatever they dream of, causing brilliant ideas to grow madly.
With Gladys the toad, who thinks she’s a cat, and Frank the fish, who lives in her hat, Tilda must discover who she is and what her enemy wants from her so badly.
But the Mayor of Moodle has other plans, including a ban on all wearing of hats, everywhere on Ooleeoo. His dark and forbidding actions seem to coincide with something unworldly, threatening all with a nameless dread and slowly blacking out the sky. With Ooleeoo itself turning upside down, how can anyone survive?
In this first in a series of Tilda Pinkerton adventures, Tilda must fight the battle of her life and risk all—even the galaxy and stars—by revealing her most electrifying secret.
Written for children but adults enjoy it too!

My Thoughts: Most of you know that I don't usually get wooed by a book cover.  I think to myself oh that's a nice cover, but what's between it.  I also rarely read fantasy, although I did as a child.  Books like James and the Giant Peach has stayed with me all these years.  Any way, I have to admit, I fell for the cover for The Adventures of Tilda Pinkerton.  I had to have it!
Boy, am I glad I fell for the cover!  What's inside is so good.  It captured my imagination and reminded me why I read fantasy books as a kid.  I would certainly rank Tilda right up there with James, no question.
Angela Shelton's imagination is fertile ground for her literary adventure with Tilda.  The writing was so crisp and vivid that the book played like a move in my head.  The characters just jump off the page and come to life.
The Adventures of Tilda Pinkerton is also set up as a learning experience for children to build their vocabulary.  So it's both fun and educational.  I highly recommend this book!

Mailbox Monday, Kind of

Hi all,

I did receive books but just had surgery on Friday and am not feeling up to being on the computer more that 10 minutes at a time.  I wanted to let you know that Hellfire & Damnation II by Connie C. Wilson , starting on five days leading up to Halloween (October 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31), is completely FREE as a Kindle download. Tell your friends!

The book is currently on tour and has received some awesome reviews.  See for yourself:
Little Black Marks
The Wormhole
Turning the Pages

Book Description:

Publisher: Merry Blacksmith Press, August 1, 2012
Category: Short Stories, Psychological Thriller
Tour Dates: October, 2012 Available in: Print, Kindle, Epub & PDF, 168 pages
Cover Art by Vincent Chong.
Hellfire & Damnation II is the sequel to the well-received  award-winning short story collection Hellfire& Damnation(www.HellfireAndDamnationTheBook.com) (E-Lit award, Silver Feather award). The first collection contained 15 short stories that described the sins punished at each of the 9 Circles of Hell within Dante’s Inferno. With that framing device and an Introduction by William F. Nolan (Logan’s Run), the 2011 visit to Hell was 47,000 words that critics called “blazingly original.”
The sequel, Hellfire & Damnation II, is slightly longer, at 53,000 words, containing 11 short stories that, once again, address the sins punished at each of the 9 Circles of Hell. Plus, this time, there is an illustration for each story and a From the Author section, which describes the inspiration for each story. [There are no recurring characters, however, so no need to have read the first book in order to plunge into the second.]
As 5-time Stoker(R) winner Gary Braunbeck said: “I really don’t know how she managed to do it, but Wilson surpasses her previous Hellfire & Damnation collection with this sequel. Her writing is stronger, streamlined, and often lyrical, despite the nastiness her words describe. This is another impressive collection of tales from a writer I could very well learn to hate if she gets much better. Seriously, Connie, can’t you write just one stinker so the rest of us will feel a little bit better?”
