A Well Rounded Challenge 2009

August 1, 2009-December 31, 2009

Last year Jan of Jottings from Jan hosted this challenge. I agreed to host it this year.

The goal of this challenge is to help us finish some of the book challenges that we are participating in.

Here's how it works:

There are 5 months left for the year, so we will read a total of 5 books, each one for a different challenge. If you are not in 5 different challenges then read at least one book for each challenge that you are in.

*Any combination of challenges works and you can change them at any time.

*You must be signed up with the other challenges.
*You may listen to eAudio, cassette tapes or compact discs.
*You may not read all five books from the same challenge.
*You don't have to blog or write a review (but you can if you want to). Please use Mr. Linky to link to your reviews.
*Even if a challenge begins after August 1st you may use it for this challenge.
*Even if a challenge ends after 12/31/09 you may use it for this challenge.
*Sign-ups begin now and run through 9/1/2009. Please use Mr. Linky to sign up for this challenge.
*Have Fun!

These are the 5 challenges I plan to read a book each for:

The Chunkster Challenge 2009

January 14, 2009- November 15th, 2009
Hosted by Dana at Feelin' Chunky

I know what your all thinking, "has Teddy lost it"? Well yes and no. LOL! I actually three chunksters that I really need to read soon because they are ARC's.

Here are the rules as outlined by Dana:

A chunkster is 450 pages or more of ADULT literature (fiction or nonfiction) Don't complain folks, I read all thousands of pages of the Twilight series and they were good, but not a challenge. A chunkster should be a challenge.

*If you read large type books your book will need to be 525 pages or more I asked around and the average LT book is 10-15% longer or more so I think that was a fair estimate.

*No Audio books in the chunkster. It just doesn't seem right. Words on paper for this one folks.

I'm going with the second option:

Do These Books Make my Butt Look Big? - this option is for the slightly heavier reader who wants to commit to 3-5 Chunksters over the next ten months.

These are the three books I plan to read (more could be added later and I am allowed to change the list):

1. Stealing Athena by Karen Essex-464 pages

2. The Kingmaking by Helen Hollick- 568 pages

3. Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly

4. The Help By Kathryn Stockett

The "I Suck at Challenges" Challenge ends July 1, 2009

Chris of book-a-rama is hosting this challenge.

I participated in a simular challenge last year hosted by Jan of Jottings from Jan, called The Well Rounded Challenge. Jan has stepped down from hosting the challenge for 2009 however, I have agreed to host it this year. I won't start it until sometime in the spring and I think that it will work nicely with this challenge.

There are two different categories for the "I Suck at Challenges" Challenge:

1. The Slackers(Aka "I will finish the Canadian Reading Challenge, I swear")I try not to sign up for too many reading challenges but even when I commit to one or two I can't seem to complete them. Last year, I failed miserably at the 1st Canadian Reading Challenge. It appears I'm heading down the same path. Are you like me? Then you are a Slacker.Join The Slackers if there are a couple particular challenges you are having trouble completing or you know you'll have trouble completing due to your track record. (Only count ongoing challenges that have deadlines of more than 3 months away, you are waaaaaay behind and you are particularly lazy. There's no shame in admitting it.)

2. The 12 Steppers(Aka "I can stop whenever I want.")There's a challenge. You see it. Your palms start to sweat. Mr Linky mocks you. You try to stop yourself but it's too late. You've committed yourself to Books That Start With Q Challenge and you know you'll do it again when the next challenge comes along. The only thing is, how are you ever going to complete them all? Sound like you? Then you are a 12 Stepper. No program is going to help you though; you're addicted.Join The 12 Steppers if you've signed up for more reading challenges than you can handle.

There is no question that I am a 12 stepper! Okay, so I don't totally suck at challenges. There were only three I didn't finish last year. However, I promised that I would sign up for fewer challenges in 2009 but I've sign up for more!

Chris explains how the challenge works:

At the end of the month, starting in February, I'll put up a post calling for your progress. Leave a comment telling us if you've completed a challenge (link to your completed challenge post), if you're struggling with any and what ones, or if the challenge deadline came and went and you never finished. At the first of every month I'll put up a post to record your progress. I'll encourage everyone to visit each other and cheer you on.

There will be incentives.

Here are the challenges that I signed up for in 2009 and also Challenges that are still in progress that started in 2008, in the order of ending date:

The Historical Fiction Reading Challenge 1st Jan 09 to 31st March 09

Book Awards II Reading Challenge August 1, 2008 to June 1, 2009

What An Animal Challenge July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009

The 2nd Canadian Book Challenge July 1, 2008 to July 1, 2009

The following challenges all end on December 31, 2009:

The 2009 ARC Reading Challenge

The PUB Challenge - 2009

New Author Challenge 2009

Themed Reading Challenge - 2009

Read Your Own Books Challenge 2009

2009 TBR Lite Challenge

Here are the rules:

  • Read 3 historical fiction books in 3 months from 1st Jan 09 - 31st March 09.

Here are the 3 books I plan to read for the challenge:

  1. Stealing Athena by Karen Essex
  2. The Kingmaking by Helen Hollick
  3. Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly

Note: My books are subject to change.

Blog Improvement Project

Thanks to Kim for hosting the 2009 Blog Improvement Project!
I know I'm already over committed for Challenges this year, but this one could help me improve my blog, so How could I pass it up? Besides it's not actually a challenge, it's a project. LOL!

This is how Kim explains what this project is about:

The 2009 Blog Improvement Project is a year-long challenge that will consist of twice-monthly activities to improve your blog. Every first and third Monday of the month I’ll post an activity here at Sophisticated Dorkiness that will related in some way to making your blog better. Each participant should spend the next two weeks focusing on that aspect of their blog. Possible topics include goals setting, writing better content, building community with readers, getting more readers, and blog layout and design.

If you choose to participate in this project, there is no obligation to participate in every challenge, and you can customize each challenge so it makes sense for your particular blog and goals. Think of the design as similar to Weekly Geeks — participate when it makes sense for you. This is a group effort, because getting better is always easier when you have a support system, but the ultimate commitment remains with you — how do you want your blog to be better by the time we get to December 31, 2009?

A word of note — I am not a blogging expert. I’m just a beginning book blogger myself. I read a lot of blogs about blogging and am interested in social media, but I am by no means any better at blogging than anyone else. One of the reasons I am hosting this project is because I want to spend time improving this blog. I believe in support systems, and think this will be a fun way to get better together.

The PUB Challenge - 2009

January 1 - December 31, 2009

Thanks to Michelle who is hosting the 2009 PUB Challenge !

Here are the guidelines:
  1. Read a minimum of 9 books first published in 2009. You don’t have to buy these. Library books, unabridged audios, or ARCs are all acceptable. To qualify as being first published in 2009, it must be the first time that the book is published in your own country. For example, if a book was published in Australia, England, or Canada in 2008, and then published in the USA in 2009, it counts (if you live in the USA). Newly published trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks do not count if there has been a hardcover/trade published before 2009.
  2. No children’s/YA titles allowed, since we’re at the ‘pub.’
  3. At least 5 titles must be fiction.
  4. Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
  5. You can add your titles as you go, and they may be changed at any time.
My 9 2009 books I will read:

New Author Challenge 2009

January 1 - December 31, 2009

Thanks to Literary Escapism for hosting the New Author Challenge for 2009.

Here are the guidelines:

  1. There is no restriction on choosing your novels. They can definitely be from other challenges.
  2. YOU decide how many new authors you want to try in 2009 and then that’s your challenge.
  3. To join, go to the post about the challenge and add your name to the Mr. Linky.
  4. If you do not have your own blog, you can join the group blog.
  5. Bloggers or Non-Bloggers alike are welcome
  6. When you read a new author, write your review (either at your site or the group blog) and then go back to the post about the challenge and post a link to your review.
I am planning to read at least 20 new authors in 2009.

Read Your Own Books Challenge 2009

January 1 - December 31, 2009

Thanks to Jenn for hosting the 2009 Read Your Own Books Challenge!

The concept is simple - read books that YOU OWN. Here are the rules:

  • Set a goal of how many books you want to read throughout the year.
  • Make a list of books you own which you want to read - the list can change at any time.
  • Books you add to your collection during the year are eligible.
  • eBooks and Audio Books are acceptable.
  • Overlaps with other challenges are fine.
I plan to read 25 books for this challenge.

Here's a partial list:

23.Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran
24.Sunflowers by Sheramy Bundrick
25.The Walking People by Mary Beth Keane

Themed Reading Challenge - 2009

February 1, 2009 - July 31, 2009

Thanks to Wendy over at Caribousmom for creating this challenge!

Here are the “rules”:

  1. Books should be chosen from the reader’s TBR pile (this may be an actual physical pile or a virtual pile).
  2. The goal is to read 4 to 6 books linked by theme.
  3. Overlaps with other challenges are allowed.
  4. Readers may change their list of books at any time.
  5. Readers may choose three different levels of participation:
  • Read at least 4 books with the same theme.
  • Read at least 5 books that share at least TWO themes.
  • Read at least 6 books that share MORE than two themes.

Themes can be geographic, genre, author, subject matter, or anything in between! Last year’s themes were wonderfully creative and varied and included such things as: books about books, books set in New England, books with a color in the title, books about vampires, books with the word ‘lady’ in the title, Gothic classics, fairy tales retold for adults, highschool classics, Asian culture, feathered friends, WWII, Canada, books in translation, and Beverly Cleary. There were many others I have not listed here!

The only thing limiting your choices is your imagination - so have fun!

I am going to do the third one with 6 books of historical fiction that are all written by female authors, who are new to me:

1.The Kingmaking by Helen Hollick

2.Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly

3.King's Fool: A Notorious King, His Six Wives, and the One Man Who Knew Their Secrets by Margaret Campbell Barnes

4.Signora da Vinci by Robin Maxwell

5.The Help By Kathryn Stockett

6.The Last Prince of the Mexican Empire by C.M. Mayo

2009 TBR Lite Challenge

Thanks to Jenn for creating this Lite challenge as an alternative to her full TBR Challenge. I decided to go Lite this year.

I am choosing Option B: read 6 books in 12 months ~ you CAN change you reading list throughout the year.

General Guidelines:

  • You must have at least 3 books on your list.
  • You are allowed to overlap with other challenges
  • Audiobooks are allowed
  • e-Books are allowed, but must still be books that you’ve wanted to read for at least 3, or more, months
  • You should still have a list of books postedsomewhere for others to see
  • You don’t have to read your books in the order you put them on your list.
There is a Yahoo Group for this challenge.

I will determine my choices later:

World Citizen Challenge

January 1-December31, 2009

Thanks to Eva at A Striped Armchair for hosting this challenge!

Eva made this challenge easy for just about everyone who wants to participate to participate. There are several participation levels. You can pick the one you want.

I'm going to do the The World Citizenship 101 Level. This is how Eav describes this level:

Maybe you’re a freshman trying to decide what to major in, maybe you’re an upperclassman in need of a distribution credit. Either way, you end up in the intro class. For this level, you need to commit to one book.

I will decide on which book later and reserve the right to change to the next level if I can come up with 3 books.
I completed The World Citizenship 101 Level with: Still I Rise by Roland Laird with Tanesha Nash Laird, Illustrated by Elihu "Adofo" Bey- African-American History.

The 2009 ARC Reading Challenge

Now through December 31, 2009

I decided to make this a year long challenge this time. My hope is that it will help us better manage are ARC's.

Here are the rules:

1. To sign up, leave a comment and a direct link to your blog post about this challenge that includes your list from rule #2.

2. List all of the ARC's that you have to read right now. Then throughout the year, you must continue updating that list as you receive more ARC's. (This is important). You should also strike out the ones that you finish.

3. a. All of us who have or will have more than 12 ARC's must read and review 12.
b. All of us who have or will have less than 12 ARC's must read all of the ARC's we have. Note, that if you have 11 ARC's and then receive a 12th one you will be bumped up to catagory a.

4. You don't have to make a list of which ARC's you plan to read, but you can if you want.

5. Crossovers with other challenges are allowed and Audio-books are allowed as long as they are ARC's.

6. Read the books and review them on your blog. If you don't have a blog, you can post your review on sites like Powells, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. Leave a comment on this post with a link to each of your reviews.

7. Please subscribe to my blog, as I will be posting updates to the challenge periodically.

8. Enjoy!

Up-Date:

Here is level 2 of the challenge. For those of you who have or will finish 12 books, read another 12 books for a total of 24 books.

Level 3 of the challenge is for the ARC Obsessed and is over 25 books.
