Giveaway: Escape by Barbara Delinsk

Thanks to Liz Leong of Doubleday, I am giving away two copies of Escape by Barbara Delinsk to two of my U.S. readers.

Book Description:

In her luminous new novel, Barbara Delinsky explores every woman’s desire to abandon the endless obligations of work and marriage—and the idea that the most passionate romance can be found with the person you know best.

Emily Aulenbach is thirty, a lawyer married to a lawyer, working in Manhattan. An idealist, she had once dreamed of representing victims of corporate abuse, but she spends her days in a cubicle talking on the phone with victims of tainted bottled water—and she is on the bottler’s side.

And it isn’t only work. It’s her sister, her friends, even her husband, Tim, with whom she doesn’t connect the way she used to. She doesn’t connect to much in her life, period, with the exception of three things—her computer, her BlackBerry, and her watch.

Acting on impulse, Emily leaves work early one day, goes home, packs her bag, and takes off. Groping toward the future, uncharacteristically following her gut rather than her mind, she heads north toward a New Hampshire town tucked between mountains. She knows this town. During her college years, she spent a watershed summer here. Painful as it is to return, she knows that if she is to right her life, she has to start here.

About the Author:

BARBARA DELINSKY is the author of more than seventeen bestselling novels with over twenty million copies in print. She has been published in twenty-five languages worldwide. Barbara lives with her family in New England.

Giveaway & Guest Post: SHADOW OF A QUARTER MOON by Eileen Clymer Schwab

I would like to welcome Eileen Clymer Schwab, author of Shadow of a Quarter Moon to So Many Precious books.

Imagine fleeing the only home you know, alone, with nothing but the clothes on your back.  Without shoes or a map, you tread through murky nights along landscape you have never seen.  You have no idea where you are going or where you will end up, yet what you are escaping makes the treacherous journey the lesser hell.  In the 1800’s the secret network of escape known as the Underground Railroad was the perfect example of the best of America in the worst of America, and it serves as a vehicle of transformation for the main character in my novel, SHADOW OF A QUARTER MOON.

Early in the book, an unimaginable secret changes the course of Jacy Lane’s life; not once, but twice.  First, when it is hidden from her, and then when it is revealed.  As the daughter of a plantation owner, Jacy has been raised in privilege until she discovers that she is the offspring of a dalliance between her father and a slave. Amid the shock and complexities of her mixed heritage, Jacy is simply a woman longing for love, happiness, and a sense of wholeness; however the 1800s are not a simple time and Jacy begins a treacherous journey of denial and self-discovery that is fraught with danger and life-altering choices.  She soon discovers that what she chases is as elusive as the secret network she hopes can save them.

As an author, I am inspired by the strength and courage of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.  I loved developing a premise that gives the reader a glimpse of a woman whose life is redefined by circumstance, but her plight should not be confused with the harsh reality of the time.  Because of the widespread sexual abuse of enslaved women by masters and overseers, the presence of mixed-race children was quite common.  Though light-skinned slaves were often favored for house duties and personal service, they still suffered the cruelty of servitude.  Any child born of an enslaved woman was considered a slave by law, regardless of any white lineage they carried.

We will never know to what extent white masters gave special treatment to their slave offspring.  Though long debated, Thomas Jefferson freed two mixed race children that many believe he fathered with Sally Hemings.  These light-skinned children eventually lived in white society. Two other children were freed upon his death.  In another well-known account, Ellen Craft, a light-skinned slave from Georgia, disguised herself as a sickly white man traveling to Philadelphia for medical attention.  Ellen’s husband, William, accompanied her, posing as the man’s servant.  After traveling first by train and then by steamship, the couple arrived safely in Philadelphia on Christmas Day, 1848.  Ellen’s successful masquerade had won their freedom.

While it’s impossible to estimate how often such a ruse was successfully perpetrated, there is no doubt as to the advantage of passing as white during that oppressive time.  SHADOW OF A QUARTER MOON and my first novel, PROMISE BRIDGE shine light on both the villainous and heroic activity of that dark time. It was an honor to look back and give voice to a generation deserving of acknowledgment, tribute, and literary life, as with any other period in our history.  Remembering and discussing their trials and triumphs can be one way of paying respect to their role in our social evolution. My hope is that the spirit of the Underground Railroad will never be forgotten.

 Book Description:

From the author of Promise Bridge comes a powerful novel of the pre-Civil War era South and the Underground Railroad.

1839, North Carolina. As the daughter of a plantation owner, Jacy has been raised in privilege- until she discovers that she's the offspring of a dalliance between her father and a slave. The revelation destroys Jacy's sense of who she is and where she belongs in the world. Equally shocking, her biological mother and brother are still slaves on the property. As she gets to know them-and the handsome horse trainer, Rafe-she begins to see life in the South with fresh eyes. And soon Jacy will have to make a treacherous journey that she hopes will end in freedom for them all...

Her second novel, Shadow of a Quarter Moon, will be released by NAL/Penguin in 2011. Giveaway: Historical Romance Blog tour

Thanks to Brianne Beers of Forever/ Hachette, I am giving away up to 3 packages of all three of these historical romance books!

Book Descriptions:

Lady of Seduction by Laurel McKee:

It's a mad, ill-advised journey that leads the usually sensible Lady Caroline Blacknall to the legendary isle of Muirin Inish, off the windswept coast of Ireland. Even so, she doesn't expect to find herself shipwrecked and then rescued by a man she believed she would never see again. A man who, long ago, held her life in his hands . . . and with it, her heart.
Reformed rake Sir Grant Dunmore knew he could never forget the beautiful woman he once endangered nor will he ever forgive himself. But history seems doomed to repeat itself, for as long as Caroline stays on the island, she is trapped in a secret plot that could forever free Ireland-or turn deadly for all. And yet, now that she is in his arms again, how can he dream of ever letting her go?

Tamed By a Highlander by Paula Quinn:

A LOVER'S PROMISE
Connor Grant left his first love in the Highlands, vowing to return after serving in the king's army. Seven years later, he is still fighting for the crown, and his victories are legendary-both in the battlefield and in the bedroom. Yet he's never forgotten his bonnie lass. And he certainly never expected to see her amidst the splendor of the British royal court: beautiful, breathtaking, and tempting him past the point of no return.
A LADY'S DESTINY
The night he left, Mairi MacGregor banished Connor from her life forever. Now her heart belongs only to Scotland. As part of a secret alliance, she journeys to London in search of information . . . only to find herself face to face with the one man she swore she'd never trust again. Though Mairi's body still craves Connor's touch, she can't forgive his betrayal. But a traitor lurks in their midst and to protect her beloved Highlands, Mairi must make a leap of faith and join forces with Connor-even if it means losing her heart to him again.

Temptation by a Highland Scoundrel by Sue-Ellen Welfounder:

The second book in the Highland Warriors trilogy, in which three heroes make a pact to insure that a rival clan doesn't take over their glen and cause destruction. At the same time, three women will plot to marry these heroes to help insure peace.
In TEMPTATION OF A HIGHLAND SCOUNDREL, Kendrew Macintosh's reputation precedes him: he wields an ax with deathly precision, strikes fear into his enemies, and lusts after beautiful women. But Kendrew has never met someone whose passion rivals his own-until an unexpected encounter with a mysterious woman. Unfortunately, he soon discovers that the vixen is Isobel Cameron, daughter of an enemy clansman. Their relationship is forbidden and Kendrew breaks away immediately. Isobel has her own scheme. She has lusted after Kendrew for some time and plans to draw the fierce warrior back into her arms. But in the darkness, villainous forces are at play—an enemy is determined to keep the two lovers apart, even if it means death.

Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday now has it's very own blog, Mailbox Monday.  It is also on tour and is being hosted by A Sea of Books in July.

Here are the books I received last week:
Thanks to St. Martins Press.  I am somewhat interested in this book but it was unsolicited.  Nonetheless, it is fun getting surprises delivered to my door.
This is another unsolicited book from St. Martin's.  It is the second in a series but I didn't read the first one.  Can it be read as a stand alone?

I also wonder if it is easier and less time consuming for this publisher to send books to bloggers without asking if they want them.  Like I said, it is fun to get surprises but I feel bad when I receive a book that I am unlikely to read.  They know that I love historical fiction and that's all they send me.
Thanks to Vagabondage Press for the eBook version.

Giveaway: The Things We Cherished by Pam Jenoff

Thanks to Liz Leong of Doubleday, I am giving away two copies of The Things We Cherished by Pam Jenoff, to my U.S. Readers.

An ambitious novel that spans decades and continents, The Things We Cherished tells  the story of Charlotte Gold and Jack Harrington, two fiercely  independent attorneys who find themselves slowly falling for one  another while working todefend the brother of a Holocaust hero against allegations of World War II–era war crimes.

The defendant, wealthy financier Roger Dykmans, mysteriously refuses to help in his own defense, revealing only that proof of his innocence lies within an intricate timepiece last seen in Nazi Germany. As the narrative moves from Philadelphia to Germany, Poland, and Italy, we are given glimpses of the lives that the anniversary clock has touched over the past century, and learn about the love affair that turned a brother into a traitor.

Rich in historical detail, Jenoff’s astonishing new work is a testament to true love under the worst of circumstances.

Giveaway and Review: The Night Train by Clyde Edgerton

It is the 1960's south and teenager Larry Lime Nolan is an aspiring jazz and blues piano player.  He meets the famous Bleeder who takes him under his wing a teaches him how to play.  Larry is black and lives on the black side of town.  He works on the white side of town doing furniture repair.

The is a piano in the back of the furniture repair shop where Larry practices during his breaks.  The owner's teenaged son, Dwayne Hallston also works there and becomes "secret" friends with Larry.  His father will not allow him to have a black friend.  Negros need to know their place, after all.

Dwayne is in a five piece band and Larry consults with them.  They both have a love for James Brown and his Live at the Apollo album, so Larry helps them rehearse two of the songs from it.  The plan is for Dwayne and his band to audition for the locally famous, Bobby Lee show.  For the audition they will play two Hank Williams songs and borrow Larry's dancing chicken.  If they win the audition they will play the James Brown songs with the dancing chicken.  However, tragedy strikes and the dancing chicken dies before the audition.

Meanwhile, Larry's family argues because the father want to eat the dead pet chicken but the rest of the family want to have a funeral.

Night Train certainly has funny moments, such as the dead dancing chicken. Some of them were a bit too subtle for me.   It is also very serious with racial tension of the deep south in the 60's.  Clyde Edgerton strikes a balance between the two, to make a memorable trip to the deep south for his readers.  His quirky characters is what really made the book.  It is because of them that I kept turning the pages.

3.5/5

A Box to Hide In by James Thurber

A couple of weeks ago the Library of America featured A Box to Hide In by James Thurber.  Since then it has been reviewed by two Short Story Monday participants, so I had to jump on in myself.  LOL!

It's a simple story the unknown narrator goes from grocery store to grocery store and other places asking if they have a box big enough for him to hide in.
"It's a form of escape", I told him. "Hiding in a box, it circumscribes your worries and the range of your anguish. You don't see people, either".
"How in the hell do you eat when you're in this box?", asked the grocer."
I can certainly relate to wanting a place to hide.  When I was going through a severe depression some years ago I hid in bed as best I could. Although my husband would come home from work and get me to eat dinner and watch some TV.  Boy is he a wonderful man, the way he helped me through it!  I took a long time but then I got back into the land of the living.
You can read A Box to Hide In here.
