Review and Giveaway: Butterfly Dreams Luxury Bed Linens

In January I reviewed a set of microfiber sheets that I had purchased on-line.  The review was not very favorable and in fact, if I were writing that review today, it would have been scathing!  They fell apart in just a few washes in cold water and on delicate cycle.

Awhile after I posted that review, I received an email from Edith Coronacion McCosker of Butterfly Dreams asking if I would like a set of their sheets to review.  Of course, I accepted, I needed new sheets, after all!
Wow, what a difference!

The Queen sheet set included one fitted sheet, one flat sheet and two pillow cases.  The fitted sheet and pillow cases are made of microfiber and are incredibly soft and luxurious feeling!  The fitted sheet is a nice texture of cotton.  I asked Edith what the two different texture and she said the top sheet is for better temperature control and also that the underside of the microfiber sheet "is not as smooth, so it won’t feel good on top of you."  That makes sense to me.
I have now had the opportunity to wash these sheets several times and they are still as luxurious feeling as the first time I used them.  There are no runs and they have not balled up at all.  I love them so much that I am buying 2 more of the pillow cases.  I use lots of pillows!

I have to give these Butterfly Dreams sheets a 5/5, they are the most luxurious sheets I have ever had.  They make me feel like a queen!
Now is your chance to own a queen set!  Edith is offering two queen sets in Serene Green to two of my readers!  This giveaway is for Canada and the U.S. and ends on August 10, 2012.  Please use Rafflecopter to enter.  I bet you will agree that Butterfly Dreams sheets are incredible!

Elusive Dawn by Gabriele Wills

Back in 2010, I reviewed the book The Summer Before the Storm by Gabriele Wills.  It was the first book in the historical fiction series called The Muskoka Novels.  Elusive Dawn is the second novel in the series.
In the summer of 1916, some of the Wyndham family carry on family tradition at their cottages at Muskoka in Canada.  However, many of the family members are in Europe, fighting the Great War.  Ria becomes an ambulance driver in France, a very dangerous volunteer job.  Her husband Chas is a flying ace in the war as is her cousin, Jack.  Her cousin Justin is a doctor, operating close to the battle grounds.

When her husband or cousins have any time off, they visit Ria as much as possible.  Her and Chas are having some marital problems they are trying to work through, which is especial difficult long distance.  The first chance they get, they take time off to set up their own house in the English countryside.  Chas wants Ria to stay there, in less danger but she goes back as an ambulance driver.
Many things happen, of course, but I don't want to giveaway any spoilers.  Elusive Dawn is a very moving piece of WWI fiction and certainly as good as the first book in the series.  Really, the only thing that still doesn't work for me, and I mentioned this in my review of book I, is Ria's stereotypical conniving stepmother.  However, we do find out a bit more about her shady past.

Will's prose is fresh and poetic.  She captures the period in great detail.  I could picture every scene in the book, like I was there.  Book 3 in the series, Under the Moon is now on sale and on its way to me.  I can hardly wait!
If you are a fan of Downton Abbey, trust me, you will love this series!  Be sure to start with The Summer Before the Storm first.

Scoop: Gabriele Wills will be going on tour with The Summer Before the Storm with Premier Virtual Author Book Tours, if you are interested in being a part of the tour, let me know.  The tour will be announced soon!
4.5/5

I received this book from the author for my honest review.

Thanks to Nicole Langan Tribute Books, I'm giving away one eBook copy of The Color of Snow.

Book Description:
Can a troubled young girl reenter society after living in isolation?

When a beautiful 16-year-old girl named Sophie is found sequestered in a cage-like room in a rundown house in the desolate hills of Arbon Valley, Idaho, the entire community is shocked to learn she is the legendary Callidora--a baby girl who was kidnapped from her crib almost seventeen years ago and canonized in missing posters with portraits of what the fabled girl might resemble. Authorities soon learn that the cage was there to protect people from Sophie, because her biological father believes she is cursed.
Sophie is discovered after the man she knows as Papa, shoots and injures Damien, a young man who is trying to rescue her. Now, unsocialized and thrust into the world, and into a family she has never met, Sophie must decide whether she should accept her Papa’s claims that she is cursed and he was only trying to protect others, or trust the new people in her life who have their own agendas. Guided by a wise cousin, Sophie realizes that her most heartbreaking challenge is to decide if her love for Damien will destroy him like her Papa claims, or free her from past demons that haunt her mind.

Giveaway: The Violinist's Thumb by Sam Kean

Thanks to Anna Balasi if Little Brown and Company, I am giving away 2 copies of The Violinist's Thumb.

Book Description:
There's enough DNA in a single cell to stretch six feet tall, and enough DNA in our bodies to stretch almost to the moon. And within this DNA are stories that have been buried for millions of years--stories that can be used to solve historical mysteries about humans, and tell of our peculiar rise on earth.

In THE VIOLINIST'S THUMB, Sam Kean uses the forensic traces in our DNA to illuminate how humans evolved from primordial muck to the most dominant species on the planet, how studying language, art, and history can reveal the scientific workings of DNA--and vice-versa, and how the human line almost went extinct, twice, causing us to be more closely related than any other species.
There are genes to explain crazy cat ladies, a love of reckless activities, and a talent for the violin; genes that could allow someone to survive in the arctic. THE VIOLINIST'S THUMB uses genes to reveal so much about our past, and leaves us wondering if and how scientists will manipulate DNA to alter our species' future.

About Sam Kean:
SAM KEAN is a writer in Washington, DC. His work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Mental Floss, Slate, the New York Post, and New Scientist. IN 2009 he was a runner-up for the National Association of Science Writers' Evert Clark/ Seth Payne Award for best science writer under the age of thirty, and he was a Middlebury Environmental Journalism fellow. Giveaway: A Soul in the Wind by Richard Finegold

Thanks to Jocelyn Kelley of Kelley & Hall Book Publicity, I am giving away one copy of A Soul in the Wind.
Book Description:

In 1946, Gideon Fruitman slid prematurely into the world to find himself in the back of an ambulance speeding toward the hospital through a blinding snow- storm―and that was the easy part! Over the next five decades, his humorous but often tragic journey reflects mankind's struggle to understand and survive the forces that shape the human condition. A Soul in the Wind is truly everyone's story, but it especially weaves itself into the fabric of the post-World War II generation, who were privileged to be a part of the ever-changing landscape of the last half of the twentieth century. The philosophy, the politics, and even the music of this exciting period are reexamined as Gideon searches for success, love, and sex in a world that constantly challenges his longing to find Paradise. A portrait of Gideon emerges as we are given a look inside a mind locked in overdrive, leaving the reader questioning his own path through life, and the dreams that got away.

Excerpt:
   Chapter One

I started to cry. The faces had begun to crack. The skin was stretched and dull. Most of the men were bald, except for a few who tried to sport their old, high school Fabian look. The women had changed, too. Their hair had gone from flowing, sandy blonde streaks, to a cotton-candy shade that was teased into a dome, and glued into place. And, somewhere in the course of time, all of them had forgotten how to dress.

Yet they seemed excited, rejuvenated with an unfamiliar energy, as the curtain opened and the Oldies concert was about to begin. It was a Public Television telethon, a holiday fundraiser, but at least it helped divert my mind from the sharp pain that had been slicing into me since early September, when I began this journal. A pain that told me the end was coming, that the quest to be someone special needed to be written down, revisited, so that maybe I could understand what went so wrong.

Then the performers came out on stage, one by one. Superimposed on the corner of the TV screen was their album cover (often their one and only) ― nothing high-tech, like nowadays, just a picture of a group, like young kids posing at the prom. But the prom was over. They were middle-aged. Former stars, now unrecognizable.

Really great songs, though. And when the camera panned back to the audience, the women, and even many of the men, could be seen mouthing the lyrics, remembering that moment long ago when their lives too were so different, and filled with such hope.

                               49 YEARS EARLIER

Chapter Two

With God laughing in the background, my mother went into labor, two months early, during a snowstorm, in the back of an ambulance. I don’t remember my birth. Judging from the baby photos, it’s just as well. My head had taken on the shape of its excursion, my hair was slick with fluid, and my eyes were crushed into narrow slits. I looked like a smashed melon, ready for the trash.

But it made the newspaper. Front page: “BABY CAN’T WAIT TO ENTER THE WORLD.” Had I known, though, what lay ahead, I would have turned around and never emerged. Unfortunately, the human animal, in all its divine wisdom, has never figured out this trick. So, instead, I endured a painful slap, released a primal scream, and continued on the path. Not exactly a yellow brick road, but a pilgrimage equally difficult, and just as uncertain.

Giveaway: The Trust by Norb Vonnegut

Thanks to Tess Woods of National Media Relations Newman Communications, Inc., I am giving away 5 copies of The Trust by Norb Vonnegut.

Book Description:

Who would have known that charitable donations could be so deadly?
One sultry morning in Charleston, South Carolina, real estate magnate Palmer Kincaid's body washes ashore, the apparent victim of accidental drowning. Palmer's daughter calls Grove O'Rourke, stockbroker and hero of Top Producer, for help getting her family's affairs in order. Palmer was Grove's mentor and client, the guy who opened doors to a world beyond Charleston. Grove steps in as the interim head of the Palmetto Foundation, an organization Palmer created to encourage philanthropy.

Community foundations, like the Palmetto Foundation, are conduits. Philanthropists gift money to them and propose the ultimate beneficiaries. But in exchange for miscellaneous benefits-anonymity, investment services, and favorable tax treatment-donors lose absolute control. Once funds arrive, community foundations can do whatever they decide.
For years Palmer showed great sensitivity to his donors, honoring their wishes to funnel funds into the charities of their choice-his unspoken pledge-and it was this largesse which made him a respected pillar of the Charleston community. But after Grove authorizes a $25 million transfer requested by a priest from the Catholic Fund, he discovers something is terribly wrong. He gets a call from Biscuit Hughes, a lawyer representing the people of Fayetteville, North Carolina, against a new sex superstore in their town. Biscuit has traced the store's funding to a most unlikely source: the Catholic Fund.

Together, Grove and Biscuit launch an investigation into the fund, but the deeper they dig, the more evidence they find that the fund's money isn't being used to support the impoverished-it's going somewhere much more sinister. When someone close to him disappears and the FBI starts breathing down his neck, Grove knows he has to figure out who's pulling all the strings before the shadowy figure who will stop at nothing to keep the fund a secret gets to him.

Giveaway, Excerpt, & Q & A: The Line between Here and Gone by Andrea Kane

Thanks to Erin McNichols of Meryl L. Moss Media Relations, Inc, I am giving away one copy of The Line Between Here and Gone.

Book Description:

A special investigations team battles local corruption and government interference in the latest nerve-racking thriller by New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Andrea Kane, the LINE BETWEEN HERE AND GONE (Harlequin MIRA; July 1, 2012; $24.95 U.S./$27.95 CAN.).  It’s a race against the clock to locate a man everyone presumed dead — all before the infant son he doesn’t know he has dies.
Amanda Gleason was distraught when authorities declared her boyfriend, Southampton real estate developer Paul Everett, a no-body homicide. They discovered signs of a struggle around his abandoned, blood-spattered car but were unable to find a body after days of searching and dredging.  Amanda was even more crushed when she realized that she was pregnant with a child that Paul didn’t live to see. When she discovers that their newborn son, Justin, has Severe Combined Immunodeficiency and desperately requires a stem cell transplant, Amanda laments the fact that the best chance for Justin’s survival would’ve been Paul, if only he’d been alive.

So when a friend emails her a photo of a man who looks identical to Paul, Amanda is stunned.  Angry and confused, she realizes that if Paul is somehow alive, he is Justin’s best hope. That’s when she turns to Forensic Instincts—a specialized team with a reputation for solving cases no one else can.

Comprised of a behaviorist, a techno-wizard, an intuitive, a former navy SEAL, a retired FBI agent and a human-scent-evidence dog, the FI team tackles the case on two fronts—the murder/disappearance of Paul Everett and his apparent resurfacing in Washington, D.C.

However, powerful foes are aligned to make certain Paul Everett stays buried, and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to make sure the FI members come up empty-handed. When the FI team members find themselves up against civic, underworld, political and government forces, they realize that not only must they be on the right track but that there is a whole lot more to Paul Everett than anyone could have suspected.

FI always gets its man, but will they find him in time to save his infant son?

Excerpt from The Line Between Here and Gone:
How could everything seem so normal when her entire world was crumbling to pieces? When everything she cared about was upstairs struggling to survive?

Still operating on autopilot, Amanda reached for her BlackBerry and turned it on.

Q&A With Andrea Kane:

1. Q: Is there a specific element in your writing that you find most challenging?

A: Descriptions. I’m much more audial than visual, so I tend towards writing “she got dressed” rather than detailing her clothing. Whereas dialog comes naturally to me, so I concentrate hard on being more descriptive.

2. Q: Which author inspires you most?

A:It depends on when you catch me. There are so many talented authors, each mastering an element. I go back as far as Carolyn Keane, when I first started reading mystery novels as a kid. I was a big mystery reader, so later it was Agatha Christie and on to Robert Ludlum. Now I read all genres, and my most memorable ones are the ones that are character based.

3. Q: What, do you feel, is your biggest success?

A:From a professional standpoint, hitting the NY Times Bestseller list and hearing from my readers about how I’ve impacted their lives. But on a personal note, being a mother is the most rewarding role I fill.

4. Q: What are you in relation to your siblings? Are you the middle child? The baby of the family?

A:I’m the baby of the family. Establishing my own identity was the challenging part, but being referred to as “baby” when you’re an adult has its perks!

5. Q: Describe your latest book in 15 words or fewer.

A:A mother is desperately searching for the father of her newborn baby – hoping that he’s alive and is a donor match to save her critically ill son.

About Andrea Kane:

Andrea Kane’s psychological thrillerThe Girl Who Disappeared Twice became an instant New York Times bestseller, the latest in a long string of smash hits. The Line Between Here and Gone is the next exhilarating installment in the Forensic Instincts series. Armed with skills and talents honed by years in the FBI and Special Forces, and training in behavioral and forensic psychology, the team solves seemingly impossible cases while walking a fine line between assisting and enraging law enforcement.

With a worldwide following and novels published in more than twenty languages, Kane is also the author of eight romantic thrillers and fourteen historical romances. She lives in New Jersey with her family, where she is plotting new ways for Forensic Instincts to challenge the status quo. For more information, please check out Andrea’s website atAndreaKane.com.

The Yellow Eye by Brayden Hirsch

John of The Book Mine Set reviewed this story back in April, 2010.  I had added it to my TBR and finally read it last night.

The Yellow Eye is written like a type of urban legend. Willow, an 11 year old girl has been on the road all day with her father when they run out of gas.  Her father sees lights up ahead and tells Willow that he is going to walk there to try to get help.  She is afaid to stay in the car alone but he tells her to go to sleep and that he would be back soon.  Soon she spots a wolf that comes to try to get into the car through the windshield and then..

What happens seems to be a product of the girl's wild imagination, but is it?  Brayden Hirsch writes a creepy story that reminds me of stories we use to tell each other, as children at slumber parties.  You know the ones, where the flashlight comes out and you know it's time for scary stories.

I can certainly see this story working for children at a slumber party but for me, there was too much suspension of belief involved to begin with. What responsible parent would leave his terrified 11 year old alone in a car, rather than bring her with him.  Also, he left the trunk open and didn't even tell her to lock the doors.  Other than that, Hirsch did a great job bulding up the tension to the climax.

Unfortunatly, the story doesn't appear to be available on the internet any longer.  The author's wordpress blog is gone.

Short Story Monday is hosted by John at The Book Mine Set.
