Twelve Strangers in the Night by Elizabeth M. Bisgood

Back in August, Twelve Strangers in the Night was The Library of America Story of the Week.  Read Handed reviewed it back in August and now I finally got to it last night.

Elizabeth M. Bisgood wrote this in 1933 when air travels was still in it's infancy.  I makes for great comparison to how far it has come since then.

The plane she described was a 12 single seat plane. Iit was 12 isle seats with windows.  That too me would have been great.  I like to look out the window bit I usually ask for an isle seat because I have to get up a lot and don't like crawling over people.  LOL!  However, if you were traveling with someone you could not sit together.

The plane was so noisy that it made having a conversation pretty impossible.  In fact, most of the passangers wore cotton in their ears.  One passenger yelled to Ms. Bisgood asking if she minded if he smokes.  She didn't mind, in fact, she had one too.  I remember clearly when there were smoking sections on air planes.  It didn't matter how far you were seated from the smoking section because the entire plane reeked!  I always had to take a shower and wash the clothes I had been wearing as soon as possible.

The plane rode a lot lower to the ground than we do now, which made for a bumpy ride.  They started out in California and a cross country flight took two days.  They made a lot of stops.  Ms. Bisgood didn't explain why but I am guessing they had to re-fuel a lot.  She also did not say if there was a bathroom on board, my first question.  LOL!

Ms. Bisgood explained about how she felt sitting apart from the other passanger, yet feeling united with them because of the experience.  Even for the passengers who had been on a flight before didn't know quite what they would experience.  Fear seemed to be quite common.
"The man across the way is rigid with fear. Any course seems terrifying to him. As we dive up into the soft mass of cloud he looks at me, shakes his head, and closes his eyes. Now that we are in the cloud all sense of motion is stopped. We seem to be suspended in a universe of cotton wool. Perhaps we are a toy aeroplane filled with stiff figures and packed in cotton for shipping."
"The fate and the fear of any one of us is the fate and the fear of the other eleven."
I really enjoyed reading Ms. Bisgood's flight experience from 1933.  It made me realize how far we have come.  However, it seems there was one other thing that was better back then besides having a single seat, she described the food as "very good".  I don't remember ever having a good meal on a plane and now, you usually don't get anything in economy class except a beverage and a small package of chips, pretzels, or peanuts.  I do remember getting free alcoholic beverages way back when, including free champagne.

Giveaway: BECAUSE OF YOU by Cathy Maxwell

Cathy Maxwell, whose national bestseller, The Seduction of Scandal, was published in September as part of Avon Books’ K.I.S.S. and Teal campaign marking National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, has set all of her novels during the Regency period, including one of readers’ favorites, 1999’s BECAUSE OF YOU. The novel has just been republished in paperback with new art and updated author information and is ready to be discovered—and rediscovered—in stores and online.

In BECAUSE OF YOU, Cathy calls upon well-loved traditions of historical romance, bringing readers a vicar’s daughter, a disinherited rakehell son of a duke and a forced marriage in the story of Samantha Northrup, a young woman alone in the world.  After her father’s death, Samantha leads a simple, orderly life in the Village of Sproule. A seductive stranger arrives at her door one stormy night and, suddenly, her world is turned upside down. Discovered in a compromising position, she is forced to marry Lord Yale, a man she barely knows, who has returned to England after being banished by his father.  Married to an outcast of society, Samantha must abandon the life she’s known for a loveless marriage and a husband who may never be able to change his ways.

ABOUT Cathy Maxwell:

Born in Olathe, Kansas, Cathy Maxwell’s family roots go back to the Mayflower and the Revolutionary War. She has long called Virginia home, noting she is “a Virginian by choice, but a Kansan by nature.” She worked in television news as a broadcaster before spending six years in the Navy. She attended Air Force intelligence school, worked in the Pentagon and did a tour with Naval Intelligence.

Cathy began her writing career in 1991 while her children were still small.  “It wasn’t easy,” she says.  “I worked full time, my husband travelled, we had three kids, I volunteered and I was writing from four until seven every morning.” Now, twenty years later, she is the author of seventeen national bestsellers and her novels appear regularly on The New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists.  A rarity in the book world, Cathy has published every one of her novels with the same publisher, Harper Collins/Avon Books.

Please give a warm welcome to Cathy Maxwell for a Q and A.

Do you remember the first Regency historical you read?  What was it?

Faro’s Daughter by Georgette Heyer. I was hooked. Heyer is still one of my favorite writers.

Do you have favorite historical literary devices (forced marriage, heroine posing as boy...? What are they? Can you link any of them to novels you have written?

I use the marriage of convenience quite often.  First, a book doesn’t have the time to go through a whole courtship, but also how many of us truly “know” the person we marry?  You can date someone for years, even live with that person—and discover you don’t know each other at all once you marry. I haven’t figured out why, but marriage really does change everything.  Sometimes it is perspective, sometimes expectations.  All I know is that after I married, I started cooking casseroles—something I’d never done before marriage!

What do you most want readers to take away from BECAUSE OF YOU?

BECAUSE OF YOU is my take of the Prodigal Son.  The Biblical Son was lucky his father was alive when he returned.  Yale was not so fortunate.  I marvel at how easily we assume others will be there for when we need them.  The truth is, we only pass this way once and must treat each day as unique.  There is no time for grudges or misunderstandings.  What Yale must learn over the course of the book is to forgive himself for not reconciling with his father.

Besides all being Regency era historicals, are there aspects of your books that repeat themselves?  Besides, of course, strong relationships, great dialogue and a happy ending.

My female characters share a common trait—they are not happy with their lives and they realize if there is to be change, it is up to them.  I believe each of us has the power to make our lives better if we are willing to toss expectations to the wind and seize living with everything we have.

What kind of research do you do for your novels? I have a super research library that I rely on and that I delve into again and again. However, the point of a romance is not the history. It’s the dynamic between two people who are falling in love—and that has never changed whether we are talking about ancient Rome or light years into the future.

All the talk about ebooks and the end of the mass market paperback makes it hard to know what to    expect to happen within the romance genre. What do you think?

I think romance is in a heyday. So many choices. So many wonderful reads. And with many authors releasing their backlist titles as ebooks, there’s even more opportunity to enjoy favorite writers.

What are you working on?   I’m working on a trilogy involving an ancient curse and the family it is determined to destroy.

Can you tell us what we should look for from you in stores in 2012?

The first book of the trilogy LYON’S BRIDE will be out in May.  The second book in November.  I’m so excited about these characters and their stories.  Also, Avon Books will re-release one of my classics, When Dreams Come True on March 27. Please check in at www.cathymaxwell.com for updates.

Please recommend a few books for my winter reading list?

Grab a copy of Princess Charming by Nicole Jordan.  Wonderful read!  It will be out February 2012.  You can’t go wrong with a book by any of my fellow Avon authors.  I did break down and buy The Mill River Recluse by Darcie Chan that has been on the bestseller lists for so long.  It’s an e-book and a good read.

How will you be celebrating this Thanksgiving?

Cooking and writing!  Two of my children, the Coast Guard officer and her husband, and my son the college   student, will be here along with their friends.  Should be a grand time and exactly the sort of day Thanksgiving was meant to be.

Thanks to Debby Tobias of Joan Schulhafer Publishing & Media and Cathy Maxwell, I am giving away one copy of Because of You.

Giveaways: 3 Tradd Street Novels by Karen White

Thanks to Debby Tobias of Joan Schulhafer Publishing & Media Consulting, I am giving 3 books from the Tradd Street series.  3 lucky winners will receive one of the following books.

The Strangers On Montagu Street:

Psychic realtor Melanie Middleton returns-only to be greeted by a house full of lost souls.
Psychic realtor Melanie Middleton is still restoring her Charleston house and doesn't expect to have a new houseguest, a teen girl named Nola. But the girl didn't come alone, and the spirits that accompanied Nola don't seem willing to leave...

The Girl on Legare Street:

Melanie has grown accustomed to renovating old houses, but she never imagined she'd have to renovate her own life to include her estranged mother. Ginnette Prioleau Middleton left Charleston thirty-five years ago. She's returned wanting to protect the daughter she's never really known after receiving an ominous premonition.

Melanie never wanted to see her mother again, but with some prodding from her partner, Jack Trenholm, she agrees-and begins to rebuild their relationship. Together Melanie and Ginnette buy back their old home. With their combined psychic abilities they expect to unearth some ghosts. But what they find is a vengeful dark spirit whose strength has been growing for decades. It will take unearthing long buried secrets to beat this demon and save what's left of Melanie's family...
The House on Tradd Street:
Practical Melanie Middleton hates to admit she can see ghosts. But she’s going to have to accept it. An old man she recently met has died, leaving her his historic Tradd Street home, complete with housekeeper, dog—and a family of ghosts anxious to tell her their secrets.

Enter Jack Trenholm, a gorgeous writer obsessed with unsolved mysteries. He has reason to believe that diamonds from the Confederate Treasury are hidden in the house. So he turns the charm on with Melanie, only to discover he’s the smitten one...

It turns out Jack’s search has caught the attention of a malevolent ghost. Now, Jack and Melanie must unravel a mystery of passion, heartbreak—and even murder.
About Karen White:

I grew up being a voracious reader and it was a natural step to turn my interest to writing. I have published 14 award-winning and bestselling novels including my May 2011 release, THE BEACH TREES, which debuted on the New York Times bestseller list at number 14.

I write what others have termed "grit-lit"--southern women's fiction, as well as a contemporary paranormal mystery series set in Charleston. All of my books are set in the US South, and feature a female protagonist at a crossroads in her life.

I live near Atlanta, Georgia with my husband, two children, and the cutest 5-year-old Havanese dog, Quincy, whom readers may recognize as General Lee in the Tradd Street series.

The Apostate by Jack London

I came across this short story by Jack London awhile ago and finally got around to reading it.  I have a faint recollection of someone reading The Call of the Wild to me but I'm not sure.  It is a book on my TBR.

There are no dogs in The Apostate but it is a good social commentary on child labor.

Johnny is just 12 years old when the story opens.  He is working in a factory to help support his mother and siblings.  His mother works in a factory as well, in fact it was twelve years ago the she gave birth to Johnny on a factory floor.
"It was Johnny, born with the pounding, crashing roar of the looms in his ears, drawing with his first breath the warm, moist air that was thick with flying lint. He had coughed that first day in order to rid his lungs of the lint; and for the same reason he had coughed ever since."
Johnny is a very hard worker and he get promoted to other tasks the earn more money.  He does best with tasks that pay per piece because he is very fast, almost like a machine, himself.
There were childhood labor laws in place by this time but Johnny was taught to lie and the factories ignored the fact that many of there workers were under age.  When his brother Will turned 12, Johnny asked his mother why Will couldn't work for awhile so he could go to school but she refused and said he was too young.  Johnny knew that she actually had plans for Will to stay in school so he could get a better job.
One day Johnny...
Yeah, you'll have to read the story to knows what happens.  Like I said, it is a good social commentary of the days back in the U.S. when children worked in factories.  It's well written and engaging.  From the descriptions of the tasks that Johnny did, I felt like I was a child working along side him.  You can read it here.
Did you review this story or another by Jack London?  If so, please leave the link in the comments.
Short Story Monday is hosted by John at The Book Mine Set.
