Lobbi discovers the varied roles and joys of being a man: fatherhood, cooking, and the love of nurturing a family, all the while retaining his identity as a son, a brother, a lover, and…a gardener.

About the Author:

Audur Ava Olafsdottir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland. She is a lecturer in the history of art at the University of Iceland, a director of the University of Iceland Art Collection, and has curated art exhibitions in Iceland and abroad. She is the author of three novels, a book of poetry, and a play. Olafsdottir is available upon request for interviews and is the first of ten Icelandic novelists to be published by AmazonCrossing in celebration of her country’s role as the guest of honor at the 2011 Frankfurt Book Fair.

As a translator and playwright, Brian FitzGibbon has a particular passion for the translation of fiction.  With experience that spans over twenty years, he has translated a vast array of film scripts, treatments, stage plays, and novels, working exclusively into English from Italian, French, and Icelandic.  His translation of the Icelandic cult novel 101 Reykjavik by Hallgrimur Helgason, published by Faber & Faber in the UK and Scribner in the US in 2002, was hailed by the Guardian as “dazzling” and the New York Times as “lucid.”

International Giveaway and Review: The Accidental Activist by Alon Shalev

The Accidental Activist is loosely based on the Mc Libel case in London that took place in the 1990's.  Like the real case, the character, Suzie and other protesters took  on a big corporation distributing leaflets about their poor environmental practise and poor working conditions.  The corporation sued for libel.  Back then, people who were sued for libel were not given a public defender but this eventually changed because of this case.  

This is a story of courtroom drama with a bit of romance thrown in.  Matt was a computer geek who happened to meet Suzie by chance.  It was instant love.  When she got sued for Libel from a big oil corporation he found a way to help her with the assistance of his co-workers/ friends.  Back then, websites were very new but they developed a website to get the word out.  This was the first political website as far as it was known.  Matt and his co-workers were basically fired from their jobs for setting it up.

I couldn't help but root for Matt and Suzie throughout the book and the courtroom drama was gripping.  It even had a bit of sardonic humor in it.  I would have liked to have seen a bit more character development but the story itself was great.  Alon Shalev has explained that he likes to write "transformational fiction where ordinary people are drawn into fighting a social injustice and in doing so experience a life-shifting internal change."  He succeeded using Matt as his transformational character.

If you're looking for a John Grisham like thriller that puts the main character in peril, this book is not for you.  However, if you want a well written courtroom drama with British humor and style, I highly recommend this book.

About T.H. Waters:

I was raised in the state of Minnesota and currently reside in Minneapolis with my significant other and two loving fur balls.  I have always been a life-long lover of the written word.  I love the magic of it, the mystique; I love the breadth of it and how it can fortify one’s spirit. 



I didn’t grow up imagining that I would one day become an author.  In fact, I never even considered it until about 8 years ago when I received news that my brother had died suddenly.  He was only 39 years old.  It was one of the saddest days of my life.  Numb and in shock, I picked up a pen and some paper, sat down at my dining room table and, with tears streaming down my face, I wrote his eulogy.

Become a Blogging Ninja: Triple Your Traffic with Social Media by Heather Neal


How to Increase Blog Traffic

When I first started my blog four years ago, it with the intention to keep better track of the books I have read.  Before that, I kept notes in spiral notebooks on books I read and had a hard time finding my notes on specific books.  My book blog has been great for that initial purpose but it has become so much more since then.

I had no idea that there was an entire community of supportive book bloggers out there who would actually read my book reviews.  All of a sudden people started commenting on my posts, then I got followers, and then the offer for free books rolled in.  Now I have over 630 followers and would love to have more.  Yes, I have become just as addicted to blogging as I am to reading books.

I recently got an offer to review Become a Blogging Ninja and couldn't pass up the opportunity.  I have only been using Facebook and Twitter for about 6 months now and know that there are more efficient ways to use them.   I want to know how to use social media to my best advantage.  I tried reading blog posts with social media tips and tricks on how to increase blog traffic.  However, I really needed someone to sit down with me and explain everything from start to finish.  

Become a Blogging Ninja is a short ebook of only 130 epages but it is packed with some very useful information about blogging and social media.  It easy to understand, even easier than the books for "Dummies" and "Idiots" series.  

First Heather gives mostly common sense tips on blogging such as being sure to proof read every post before you post it, keeping the side bar neat and tidy and not cramped, and using a large enough font size to make it as easy as possible for people to read your content.  She also stressed that you should promote other bloggers as well.  In return, you will be promoted as well.  I have experienced this first hand, so I know it's true!

Social Media

Then she got into Facebook.  She explains how to sign up and create a Facebook pages.  I would have found this quite helpful when I was setting up my page.  She suggested that you upload photos from you blog to Facebook and add a witty caption with a link to the corresponding blog post.  I have never done this but can certainly see how it could capture people's attention.

She also talked about the use of the @ sign, which was totally new to me as well.
"If you've reviewed a specific product or featured another blogger, posts for you etc., be sure to tag them when you share your blog post link. You can tag on Facebook by entering the "@" symbol before a name or page. {You have to be friends or "like" them in order to do this.} This automatically puts your post on their Facebook wall. Instant exposure to a new crowd!"
Then Heather talks about Twitter, what it is, how to tweet and follow, and what some of the lingo is.  She explains the use of the # hashtag, which I have already been doing.  She explains the use of applications for Twitter such as TweetDeck or Hootsuite, which was totally new to me.
"One advantage of using a Twitter application as opposed to the native Twitter website is that you can view multiple streams at once.  With one glance at the screen, you can see your  Twitter stream, your mentions, your direct messages, and almost anything else you choose."
Heather suggests keeping your Tweets to about 125 characters instead of the 140 characters allowed.  This makes it easier for people to retweet your tweets.  I'll have to work on this because I have enough trouble getting my Tweets down to the 140 characters.  LOL!  She also suggests using tools such as Timely or Buffer to schedule your tweets.  They help you find the best times for tweets to post. I just recently found out about Buffer but still not quite sure how to use it.

Next, Heather talks about Stumble Upon.  Now I've been "kind of" using it for awhile but have been un-sure how to really use it, so I was really looking forward to this part of the book.  She explains how to find people to follow.  I couldn't figure that out on my own, so that really helped.  She also gave a good overview of what kinds of posts to stumble.  Once a post is stumbled it's up there forever, so it's good to us stumble for "timeless" posts, not ones that will expire such as giveaways. 

It is important to add social media buttons to your post or sidebar where people can easily find them and use them to share your posts.

SEO

Heather then covers Search Engine Optimization (SEO).  Before I read this, I didn't even know what SEO stands for.  LOL!
"The main thing to understand about SEO is keywords.  Keywords are really just search engine terms.  The higher your website ranks for a certain keyword, the closer to the top of the search results list you'll be."
Heather explains how to find the correct keywords, including the use of Google AdwordsKeyword tool.  Once you figure out the keywords it's time to use them.  I had no idea how, but I do now, thanks to Heather.  I know it will take practice but I tried to use my new knowledge of using keywords with this post.

Heather really covers a ton of useful information in Become a Blogging Ninja, too much for me to go into in this one post.  If you want to learn more on how to use social media and SEO effectively, I highly recommend this book!  Hopefully, I'm on my way to becoming a Blogging Ninja.

The Ballad of the Great Yukon Puke On by Noodleepoodlee

I can't for the life of me remember how this story came to my attention.  It was written on the noodleepoodlee website, which I had never heard of.  If you brought it to my attention, I would love to give you credit.

The sub-title to this story is "Special Correspondent’s Report Hobo Joe Goes Rogue: Off the Bus, On the Wagon and Hitting the Highway"

Let me start off by saying that this is a strange story.  Not that that's bad, in fact it was just so different, that it was refreshing.

Here is how it starts out: "Call me Hobo Joe. Yeah, I know… another Joe; it’s one of the few names Mrs. Palin can remember. Like Joe O’Biden … or Joe Arpaio or Joe Miller. Until recently, I was Joseph Campbell Sales, history advisor and image consultant (i.e. handler of opposition research, subtle pressure, veiled threats, rumor and innuendo), one of many clowns riding sidecar in the Palinpalooza Traveling Road Show and Political Action Circus’ motorcycle fleet."

Joe met Noodleepoodlee in a bar along with some other people.  They got quite intoxicated and when the bar closed went to Noodlepoodle's place to eat and sleep.  They next day they all continued the party but they also developed a cover operational plan that Joe doesn't quite remember following through on.   He does remember waking up in a jail cell and being fired, it sounds like it was Sara Palin, herself.  

Joe goes on to tell us what happened and the results are pretty funny. I can't help wonder if this story has any basis of truth to the events described.  You will have to read it for yourself, to see what happens.  I would love to know your thoughts on it.  You can read it here.

Her first published story "Disturbing The Peace" was an honorable mention in the first annual Rope & Wire Western short story competition, and is now collected with six others that are appearing for the first time in her debut short story collection, The Ranch Next Door and Other Stories. She lives with her family and a large stack of writer’s notebooks in the northeastern U.S.
