Giveaway: Velwythe by Bonn Turkington

Thanks to Michelle Carpenter of Media Guests, I am giving away one copy of Velwythe.  Sorry, this one is for the U.S. only.

Book Description:
His mother vanished. His father killed himself. Vaan, now 21 has no friends, no money, no family, and no hope. All his dreams has vanished. Unable to escape the horror of his own memories, his life has been in stasis.

But with a bit of luck and a bit of effort Vaan manages to make his first real friend since childhood. Duncan, a man who has watched the growing railline destroy his entire home city, was disowned after denying his birthright.

Vaan and Duncan become fast friends with troubled pasts. Now, with Duncan’s help and the ‘encouragement’ of a local priest, Vaan decides his life has remained in a quagmire too long. Only by selling his house and everything he owns will he have a chance to become a wandering scholar.

Every year around the FreePort Solstice Festival (and his birthday) Vaan has terrible nightmares of his father's chronic pain. But the night before the festival Vaan has a dream unlike any before. He wakes up thinking he has gone blind – but it isn’t just that, he can feel something, something cold pawing at his head as though it is absorbing his very thoughts.

Lady of the English by Elizabeth Chadwick

When Matilda's husband, the German Emperor, died Germany had no use for her.  Since she didn't have a son, the thrown went to someone else.  Thankfully, her father, King Henry I of England sent for her to return home.  At least she knew she wouldn't end up in a German nunnery.

When she returned home Matilda met her new sep mother, Queen Adeliza.  They were very close in age and became fast friends.  Then Matilda found out her father had great plans for her, indeed.  She was to become Queen of England, at least until her unborn son could rule.  First Henry had to find her a new husband, so she could have a son.  He found just the "man", a almost 14 year old boy named, Geoffrey from Anjou.

Matilda detested Geoffrey and he felt the same about her however, they were able to fulfill their duty and had sons.  Although all the barons of England swore allegiance to Matilda and promised to follow her, when Henry died, the swore allegiance to her cousin Stephen and he was crowned.  Meanwhile, Matilda still had some faithful followers and with their help over the years, she struggles with Stephen over the crown.

This is the best Elizabeth Chadwick book yet!  The cast of both real and imagined characters are brought back to life in living color.  I could see and feel them in my imagination with the superb writing and research of Chadwick.  I was totally immersed in this book as I have experienced with all of her books. This book is fast paced, with never a dull moment.   If you love historical fiction, Elizabeth Chadwick is a must.  Lady of the English would be a great book to start with.

5/5

Thanks to Laura Brotzman of Sourcebooks for the advance reader copy of this book.

Giveaway: The Traitor's Wife by Kathleen Kent

Thanks to Anna Balasi of Little Brown and Company, I am giving away 3 copies of THE TRAITOR'S WIFE, one copy of which will be paired with The Heretic's Daughter.

The Traitor's Wife Description:

This novel was originally published under the title The Wolves of Andover.

In the harsh wilderness of colonial Massachusetts, Martha Allen works as a servant in her cousin's household, taking charge and locking wills with everyone. Thomas Carrier labors for the family and is known both for his immense strength and size and his mysterious past. The two begin a courtship that suits their independent natures, with Thomas slowly revealing the story of the role he played in the English Civil War. But in the rugged new world they inhabit, danger is ever present, whether it be from the assassins sent from London to kill the executioner of Charles I or the wolves-in many forms-who hunt for blood. At once a love story and a tale of courage, The Traitor's Wife confirms Kathleen Kent's ability to craft powerful stories from the dramatic background of America's earliest days.

About Kathleen Kent:

Kathleen Kent lives in Dallas with her husband and son. The Heretic's Daughter is her first novel.

Most of the books that have influenced and touched me the most are historical fiction.  When I was a child I read a lot of Dickens, Poe and H.H. Monroe.   Some of my favorites from the past are The Quincunx, by Charles Palliser, Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears, The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve, and The Source by James Mitchener.  I also read everything by Annie Dillard, Cormac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry.  Currently I'm re-reading a book called The Long Home by William Gay who is, to me, one of the best writers in American fiction today.

Giveaway: Velva Jean Learns to Fly by Jennifer Niven

Thanks to Milena Brown of Penguin Group | Plume, I am giving away one copy of Velva Jean Learns to Fly.

Book Description:
In VELVA JEAN LEARNS TO FLY (A Plume original / August 30, 2011) the feisty Velva Jean Hart drives off from Appalachia to Nashville to follow her dream: singing at the Grand Ole Opry. But after Pearl Harbor , Velva Jean pins her sights instead on getting her wings.

Set during the tumultuous years of World War II, when men were called to duty and women were given the opportunity to step forward and serve their country, this second novel from Jennifer Niven is an inspiring story of one woman’s determination and independence.

Here we see the ever-intrepid Velva Jean become a pioneering member of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots. Fewer than 1,000 women made the cut and became women pilots in this extraordinary program. These brave women flew the oldest, patched-together planes—and were finally given veteran status in 1977 and received the Congressional Gold Medal from President Obama. Set against this fascinating backdrop, the spellbinding story of Velva Jean’s training and flying sheds light on the amazing service performed by these daring women. It’s a page-turning story of heroics, romance, and poignant losses. Penned by an author who truly makes stories come to life, VELVA JEAN LEARNS TO FLY is an enormously exciting adventure and coming-of-age novel with more a little something for every reader.

About the Author:
Jennifer Niven is the author of The Ice Master, which was named of the top ten nonfiction books of the year by Entertainment Weekly and won the prestigious Gambrinus Giuseppe Mazziotti Prize in Italy .  Her second book, Ada Blackjack, was a Book Sense Top Ten Pick.  Her books have been translated into ten languages.  Her first novel, VELVA JEAN LEARNS TO DRIVE, is based on her own screenplay, which became an Emmy Award-winning short film.  She lives in Los Angeles.

Abandoned by Guy de Maupassant

Yes, a second short story review in one day.  My goal this year is to write one short story for every week in 2011.  Since I wasn't able to post a review last week, this is a catch up post.

Back in July, 2011, JoAnn of Lakeside Musing reviewed this story.  I downloaded it onto my Kobo (ereader) to read in the future.

Madame de Cadour, a woman of senior years,  asks her husband to go for a walk with her but he would never dream of it "in this heat."  He tells her that if she must go, she should ask their friend, Monsieur d'Apreval, to go with her.  He gladly accepts and they leave.

Once they are out of ear shot, it becomes quite apparent that they had an affair together when they were much younger, which resulted in Madame de Cadour having a child. in secret.  They are walking to see the child, now a 40 year old man, without letting on that they are related to him.

Guy de Maupassat wrote a richly textured story of loss and Parisian life and how different it is between the wealthy and the peasants.  I highly recommend it.  You can read it here.

Short Story Monday is hosted by John at The Book Mine Set.

Still Life with Blake by Monica Kidd

Back in February 2010, John of The Book Mine Set reviewed this story.  I had printed it off to read and then promptly forgot about it.  The other day I was straightening up my office and came across it.

Life with Blake is a postcard story, also known as flash fiction, meaning it is less than 500 words.

The unnamed narrator is in the process of giving birth when Blake enters the room.  She makes it quite clear that he is no longer her boyfriend.
"Mother was civil to him.  Amazing, considering her long list of ways she'd like to castrate him."
Since the story is so short I will give too much away if I write more.  However, don't let it's shortness fool you this is a well crafted, well developed story with a little punch.  I loved it!  You can read it at the Geist Magazine website.

Short Story Monday is hosted by John at The Book Mine Set.
