Review and Giveaway: My Year as a Clown by Robert Steven Williams

Today kicks off the book tour for Robert Seven Williams and his novel My Year As a Clown.

Book Description:

Robert Steven Williams is the recipient of the Silver Medal for popular fiction in the 2013 Independent Publisher Book Awards for My Year as a Clown.

Publisher: Against the Grain Press  (Dec. 26, 2012)
Category: Contemporary Fiction/Literary Fiction/Humor/Relationships
Tour Date: June 24th Through July, 2013 (Dates may vary)
Available in: eBook,  325 pages

With MY YEAR AS A CLOWN, Robert Steven Williams introduces us to Chuck Morgan, a new kind of male hero—imperfect and uncertain—fumbling his way forward in the aftermath of the abrupt collapse of his 20-year marriage.

Initially, Chuck worries he’ll never have a relationship again, that he could stand in the lobby of a brothel with a hundred dollar bill plastered to his forehead and still not get laid. But as the emotionally raw, 365-day odyssey unfolds, Chuck gradually relearns to live on his own, navigating the minefield of issues faced by being suddenly single—new routines, awkward dates, and even more awkward sex.

With My Year As a Clown, Robert Steven Williams will attract fans of the new breed of novelists that includes Nick HornbyJonathan Tropper, Lolly Winston, and Tom Perrotta, delivering painfully honest glimpses into the modern male psyche while writing about both sexes with equal ease and grace in a way that’s hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.

My Thoughts:

At first glimpse, some readers may mistake My Year As a Clown as a book that would appeal to men only.  Let me reassure you, that is far from true!  Sure, there is some football in it but as a symbol of loyalty and commitment.

Chuck Morgan is devastated when his wife leaves him for another man.  Like many women or men often do when a long term relationship ends he digs himself in a rut.  He is emotionally spent and doesn't know how to deal with the situation or his loss.
Friend and relatives who mean well give him phone numbers of women to call for dates but it is clear that isn't what he needs.

The book is written in journal style, starting at day one since his wife left him, through day 365.  This style works perfectly for this novel.  It reads smoothly unlike some books that are written in this way.

My Year As a Clown is like a memoir, as the story and characters ring true to me.  As Chuck begins to try to dig himself out of the rut, we share his triumphs and failures.  We can tell he is a good person but has human failings, just like all of us.

Robert Steven Williams takes the reader on an emotional roller-coaster as we follow Chuck for a year.  His writing is raw and at times profound.  At times there is biting humor.  I would have loved to have follow Chuck through another year or two of his life however, I think that it would have made for too much of a pat ending.  There are some loose ends that are tied up by the end, but true to life, not all of them.

I highly recommend My Year As a Clown!

Even her new boyfriend starts acting suspiciously. Just who can she trust?

Excerpt:

Gradually easing into the Jacuzzi, I felt the warm, comforting water envelope my body.
Brett handed me another glass of wine. “Enjoy,” he said and left to change into his swimming trunks.
I leaned back, appreciating the solitude, and gazed at the stairs. I listened to low soothing music and saw Brett standing above me. I sat up and stared at him. I knew he had a good build from the way he appeared in his clothes, but I had no idea!  Oh, his broad shoulders, muscular arms, and pectorals took my breath away. He was gorgeous.
As he moved into the water, his deep blue eyes were mesmerizing. He put his arm around my shoulders. I felt his hot breath on my bare skin as a burning desire for him soared through my body. I turned toward him, kissed his neck, and ached for more. What was I doing? This wasn’t what I wanted. I hadn’t felt like this about him before. It wasn’t like me to act that way.
With a mischievous smile, he took a drink of his wine.
Had he changed his mind about me and decided to play hard to get? I stroked his arm. What was wrong with me? I should have slid away from him; instead, I moved closer. I wanted him! As soon as he put down his glass, I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him. I continued kissing him even when I gasped for air.
“Let’s go upstairs,” he whispered.
“Oh yes!” I sighed as my heartbeat raced and my breathing became more erratic. I kissed him again.
He picked up our glasses and handed me mine. “To our new relationship.” He clicked my glass.
I exhaled and drank, knowing I was going to get what I wanted. A second later, we got out of the Jacuzzi and carried our glasses to my bedroom.
After making love for over an hour, we stopped to catch our breath. He filled our wine glasses again. I thought Conner was a great lover, yet he was no match to Brett. No one could possibly be better. And to think, I was going to leave him without ever having known this ecstasy.
“What are you thinking?” he asked.
“I’m wondering why I waited so long for this.”
He smiled, put both wine glasses on the nightstand, and gently ran his hand down my body.

Feeling someone tugging on my legs, I opened my eyes. Through foggy vision, I saw two women with solemn expressions on their faces pulling me out of bed. I felt dizzy. I tried to talk, but only gibberish came from my mouth. The woman with long black hair put a robe on me. The other one slipped shoes on my feet. I wanted to float away. They held my arms preventing me from rising. With my feet hovering above the floor, they led me down the stairs and through the house to the backdoor. Were they angels taking me to see Mom and Dad? The black-haired woman put a blindfold over my eyes. Then I heard a door open. They continued holding my arms while I glided between them.
A crisp, cool breeze hit my face. The women remained quiet, not saying a word, as we moved along. The rustling of leaves surrounded us. I smelled pine trees. If they’d just let go of me, I could drift to the tree tops.
“Bring her here,” a man yelled.
My blindfold was removed. I found myself inches from the man with the penetrating, dark eyes I had seen at the hotel. He must have followed me! I felt a convulsion of terror seize my body. I squirmed and wiggled, trying to free myself from the hands that held me firmly. He wouldn’t release me. I gave up. I was trapped!
The dark-eyed man held up my trembling hand and placed a spider in my palm. I marveled at the warm, chestnut-brown color with specks of black dribbled through it. I gently touched it. Then the dark-eyed man turned over my hand and tapped it against a metal container. The spider tumbled inside, landing next to three others that looked just like it. He snapped the container lid in place and slipped it into his shirt pocket.
He led me through a cluster of cobwebs that clung to my face. He brushed them away and placed my hand on a person. I glanced down and saw spiders crawling on the stout man whose wife had been bitten in the hotel. He was laying on something that looked like a granite table. His eyes were wide open, staring straight ahead. Blood oozed from deep scrapes on his arms. His face was pale and immobile. Was I at his funeral?
The dark-eyed man guided me to a chair, sat me down, and held onto my shoulder to stop me from rising above the ground. I opened my mouth to speak. No sound escaped. My eyes darted around looking for Brett; he wasn’t anywhere. He wouldn’t have left me. Something must have happened to him. My heart started beating faster. The dark-eyed man ran his hand up and down my cheek. My heartbeat slowed down.
Three people blocked my vision as they moved between me and the stout man on the table. I watched as a slender blond-haired man carrying a knife walked in front of them and passed out of my sight.

Book Description:

When vintage shop owner Amanda Rosenbloom visits the Manhattan apartment of aging socialite Jane Kelly, she discovers a century-old journal concealed in the lining of a fur muff and is irresistibly drawn into the life and times of Olive Wescott, a young woman who moved to New York with her father in 1907.  Olive has ambitions to become a department store buyer, but when her father dies is left on the brink of poverty and must take a low-paying job as salesgirl at the Siegel-Cooper Department Store. (The building where she worked still stands today as Bed, Bath & Beyond on 18th Street & 6th Avenue.)

As Amanda continues to read Olive's journal, her life begins to unravel until she can no longer ignore the haunting words. As she begins to piece together the truth, Amanda finds that she is connected to Olive in ways neither could have imagined and, by understanding the past, is finally able to embrace her own future.  The past and present intertwine through the stories of two women—one longing to succeed in a rapidly modernizing world and the other clinging tightly to yesterday.  With historical photographs and details throughout, Astor Place Vintage takes readers on a fascinating tour of New York City both at the turn of the century and today.

Giveaway: MISSING IN MACHU PICCHU by Cecilia Velastegui

Thanks to Staci Burt of Wunderkind PR, I am giving away one copy of Missing In Machu Picchu.

Book Description:

High in the Andes Mountains on the legendary Inca Trail, four professional women embark on an adventure to help them confront their online dating woes––only to find themselves victims to a predator’s ruse, and in a fight for their lives.  But, unbeknownst to the hikers, they have been under the vigilant presence of Taki and Koyam, two elderly indigenous women who understand the danger the women are facing.  By following the wisdom of their mummified Andean ancestor, Taki and Koyam work to save the women and act with spine-tingling resolve against the sinister forces of Rodrigo and his minions.

Chapter One
Gossip is the hot brew that warms an icy heart. Koyam and Taki could always count on the mouthwatering taste of gossip to fire them up on the bitingly cold Andean mornings.  The promise of chitchat made these two elderly street vendors suck their shriveled fingers with anticipation of the succulent details coming their way.  But they were no mere chattering birds: they saw themselves as honorable listeners who never passed the tattling down the grapevine without a good reason or acted maliciously on hearsay.
Gossip simply provided tasty tidbits they could mull over while they sold their homemade souvenirs to the foreign tourists wandering Cusco’s frigid Plaza de Armas. For the last three years, ever since Machu Picchu was added to the list of the Seven Wonders of the World, foreigners had descended like ravenous locusts, hungry to check yet another “Third World” Eden off their bucket list of exotic vacations.
“Rodrigo!  Did the gringa just say––Rodrigo?” she hissed, strangling the corners of her old alpaca shawl.
“Indeed, she did,” said Taki. “But the youngest gringa said Rod.  Perhaps they are speaking about a different man.”
“If it is Rodrigo, they are not talking about a human being––they’re talking about a
monstrosity––”
“Calm down, Koyam, you always overreact.  Let’s get a little closer to the gringas and listen to what they’re saying.”
“We can get as close as flies in quinoa stew, but we’re still not going to understand all the gringa chatter,” Koyam retorted.
“We understand a lot more than they think we do.” A mischievous grin lit up Taki’s wrinkled bronze face. “How do you think we haggle and pester them into buying our souvenirs?”
Koyam didn’t answer. She stared across the plaza towards the twin bell towers of the cathedral, silently invoking the sacred mountain beyond: Huanacauri.  She didn’t dare utter the name Rodrigo, not even as she begged her ancestors to curse this beast for eternity.  She thought he had left Cusco for good, but if he was back, Koyam would be forced to retaliate.
Her lips were clamped, her mouth tight as the stone walls her Inca ancestors built in their sacred city.  All these centuries later, it was impossible to wedge even a credit card between those stones.  She and Taki loved to watch the tourists try, laughing whenever they broke their funny money: it was their very own street-clown show.  Koyam didn’t care if the credit cards were ruined. She and Taki only dealt in cash.
But today Koyam wasn’t laughing. She sealed her lips so her prayers could not be observed by anyone else in the plaza.  Her great-grandchildren often scolded her for openly talking about the ancient ways: the old beliefs in huacas, the sacred places and objects so revered by their ancestors. They forbade her to mention the supernatural being who feasted on sacrifices on top Anahuarqui Mountain. They admonished her as if she were the village idiot, and not their seventy-year-old matriarch who still helped support the family.  She felt sorry for them. Not only had they lost respect, they were forgetting the ancient ways.  It would be their loss not to have Anahuarqui on their side.
Koyam tried to remind them of the words of Manco Capac, their emperor from centuries ago: “Do not forget us, your ancestors. Adore and cherish what we hold dear. The deities, the sun and moon, speak to us. Don’t forget your ancestors who are all around you, watching everything that you do.  Honor them.  Respect them or they will––”
She never got to finish the rest of Manco’s speech, made hundreds of years ago at nearby Ollantaytambo.  Once her great-grandchildren had accomplished the purpose of their visit––to lecture Koyam, as usual––they fled to their next appointment. They all wanted to be perceived as young and modern professionals, working diligently in the tourist-related industries that had blossomed in Cusco in the last decade.
Every once in a while Koyam’s sweet-talking great-granddaughters stopped by the plaza, saying they just wanted to chat with her and Taki before meeting up with a tour group outside the cathedral.  They liked to remind Koyam that she should be happy they were living in such an advanced and technologically superior era. Taki knew what they really wanted: to shame their great-grandmother into silence, to stifle what they saw as her antiquated mumbo-jumbo about mummies and sacrifice and the afterlife.  They didn’t want her to feed tourists any pseudo-mystical gruel like the bogus shamans who set up shop in the shadowy outskirts of the plaza, offering the tourists a temporary high, and lots of nonsensical talk about the cosmos and harmony.

Giveaway: THE HYPNOTIST’S LOVE STORY by Liane Moriarty

Thanks to Jessica Butler of  Berkley/NAL, Penguin Group USA, I am giving away one copy of  The Hypnotist's Love Story.

Book Description:

Ellen O’Farrell has grown tired of the lack of respect her profession is afforded by others—especially her critical physician mother. She is proud to be a hypnotherapist and has found her niche. Unfortunately, she has not been as lucky in love. That is, until she meets Patrick Scott. A handsome young widower she met through an online dating service, Patrick seems too good to be true. So when he one day announces that he has something to tell her, Ellen braces for the worst. His confession: he is being stalked by a former girlfriend. That’s okay, Ellen assures him, and inwardly she has to admit that she finds the situation kind of intriguing. Thrilling, even.

Ellen would love to learn everything she can about the woman—Saskia—but she refrains from pumping Patrick for details because it clearly upsets him.  Indeed, Ellen would love to get inside this woman’s head. What she doesn’t realize is that she already knows her. The obsessed Saskia, under an assumed name, has become one of Ellen’s hypnotherapy clients intent on getting as close as possible to her perceived rival.

As Ellen and Patrick grow deeper in love, Saskia grows even more fixated on her former lover. What Patrick failed to see is Saskia’s deep attachment to his young son, Jack, whom she nurtured in the wake of his mother’s death. Meanwhile, Ellen gets some news that could forever change her life and could either solidify or jeopardize her relationship with Patrick. Could Saskia exploit this new development to further her own calculated motives?

Liane Moriarty tells this riveting story from two points-of-view, granting Saskia equal voice, and brilliantly portraying the roots of obsession. Told with deftly-wrought suspense and unexpected humor, THE HYPNOTIST’S LOVE STORY captures the vicissitudes of life and love as it explores what Sigmund Freud aptly observed: “One is very crazy when in love.”
