Unwilling to take no for an answer, propelled by a passion for his subject, and already deep into his research, Shields wrote again and this time, to his delight, the answer came back: "O.K." For the next year—a year that ended up being Vonnegut's last—Shields had access to Vonnegut and his letters.

I've created a blog,"Writing Kurt Vonnegut" which is about the art and craft of biography, based on my experiences. I'm treating it as a kind of journal, and a new entry will appear every Saturday.
A biographer is a literary detective, a Columbo who's always saying, "Now let me get this straight" or starting a lot of sentences in his mind with "In other words...."
You'll find out what it's like trying to research and tell, for the first time, the life of one of the most popular, controversial, and influential novelists of the 20th century by Googling "Writing Kurt Vonnegut."
