Caribou Island by David Vann

With the backdrop of the rugged Alaska wilderness, Caribou Island starts off as a precursor of what is to come. Irene tells her daughter ,Rhoda about her mother's suicide and how she was the one to discover her hanging.
"It was long ago, Irene said. And it was something I couldn't see even at the time, so I can't see it now. I don't know what she looked like hanging there. I don't remember any of it, only that it was."
Irene and Gary have been married for well over 25 years and are not getting along. The each want different things. Gary wants to move out to the desolate Caribous Island and build a cabin from scratch, with no plans or blue prints and no input from anyone else. Irene doesn't appear to know what it is she wants, but it isn't living in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. She never really wanted to live in Alaska, to begin with.
"The trees all around seemed almost an audience, standing there waiting, watching her. Sentinels in the shadows, hidden away on a moonless night. She had never grown accustomed to this place, never felt it was home."
Irene knows that if she doesn't go along with Gary's plan that their marriage will be over. She does go along with it but grudgingly and Gary knows it and resents her for it. Rhoda tries to be the peace keeper between her parents while trying to figure out her own life. She plans to marry her boyfriend who is a dentist. She also tries to enlist her brother, Mark's help with their parents but he is a stoner who doesn't want to get involved. He tries to stay as far away from his parents as he can.

Nobody in this book has experience genuine love and are not in love with their parents. There is a lot of arguing, back jabbing and even some adultery. In the last chapters of the book everything comes to a head and a heartbreaking conclusion.

Caribou Island is a very bleak novel and David Vann sets the tone from the first page. He uses the Alaskan wilderness as a symbol for the isolation and sadness of his characters. His writing is sparse yet meaningful. However, there was a character, Monique that felt out of place , that was just thrown in to have an affair with one of the main characters. She was so superficial that I felt she distracted from the real story.

I did think the novel was worthwhile and I did enjoy David Vann's writing style.

Sweet Tooth: Out of the Deep Woods by Jeff Lemire

Gus is an endangered new breed, half human and half animal hybrid. He is human with the features of a deer with antlers pointy ears. Children started being born with various animal features after the "affliction" started.

Gus lives with his father in the woods. His mother died of the affliction years ago and his father will die soon. All adults are dying off rapidly. It is only the hybrids who are immune. Gus has to stay very near their cabin and hide from the hunters. Hybrids are very valuable, for research purposes, as scientists race to find a cure for the adult population.

When his father dies, Gus tries to keep his promise to his promise to stay in the cabin but he still has to go outside for firewood, food, and water. One day a mysterious man, Jepperd finds Gus. He tells him that he will take him to a hybrid sanctuary where he could live with other children like himself, in peace. With food getting hard to find near the cabin, Guys goes with him.

Is Jepperd as honest, as he seems to Gus?

I finished this book in one short sitting. It has Jeff Lemire's amazing drawing with the added bonus of color by

Jose Villarrubia. Though the premise sounds crazy, Lemire makes it work with his spare words, relying heavily on the graphics.  There is quite a bit of violence in this book, which I don't care for but it was needed for this book.  I found myself caring deeply for the fate of young Gus and am awaiting Sweet Tooth 2, on hold at my library.

The Shelfish Giant by Oscar Wilde


I read another Oscar Wilde story.  It was a very short,5 page fable like story.  I don't usually read fantasy but this was a nice little change of pace.

There was a beautiful garden where all the children in the village played.  It was the giants garden but he had been out of town for years.  

One day, the giant returned and yelled at the children that it was his garden to play in, not there's.  He built a wall around the garden so no one could come inside his garden again.  

Winter came and persisted month after month, well past when spring and then summer should have arrived.  Can you guess what happened?

The moral of the story was very obvious to me right away but I am sure Wilde wrote this for children.  I still enjoyed it a short and sweet bed time story.  You can read it here.

Themed Reading Challenge 2011

 February 15- August 15, 2011

The Themed Reading Challenge is a challenge that was thought up and hosted by Wendy at Caribousmom.  She was looking for someone to take over hosting it and I jumped at the chance.

This is a six month challenge designed to help readers clear books from their to-be-read stacks which center around a common theme or themes.  

 Rules
  1. Readers may join at ANY TIME between now and August 15th.
  2. Books should be chosen from the reader’s TBR pile (this may be an actual physical pile or a virtual pile).
  3. The goal is to read AT LEAST 5 books linked by theme and review them.
  4. Overlaps with other challenges are allowed.
  5. Readers may change their list of books OR their theme(s) at any time.
Readers may choose from three different levels of participation:
  1. Read at least 5 books which share the same theme.
  2. Read at least 5 books which share TWO themes.
  3. Read at least 5 books which share MORE THAN TWO themes.
Themes can be geographic, genre, author, subject matter, or anything in between! Last year’s themes were wonderfully creative and varied…check out the sign up links from the 2010 challenge to get an idea of what others have chosen for themes.

To sign up, please create a post on your blog about this challenge and the themes you will use and then sign up in Mr. Linky below, linking back to your post about the challenge.  Please post all of the books you have reviewed for this challenge in Mr. Linky, below, as well.
