Still I Rise by Roland Laird with Tanesha Nash Laird, Illustrated by Elihu "Adofo" Bey

A Graphic History

'Still I rise' is a graphic history book about the struggles, heroic, and triumphant history of African Americans. It mentions all of the largely known history but it also tells of more little known facts and of important people who helped shape how America is today.

Something I certainly didn't learn in my school history books was that of indentured servitude which lead to slavery. I didn't enjoy my history classes back in grammar school or high school because the text books were dry.

This book would make students want to learn the history of African Americans! It is a short book but the details of the history included are rich in detail. It is well researched, well written, and beautifully illustrated.

This is my first time reading a graphic book. There have been some that sound good but I have been hesitant. I visualize a comic strip, like the Sunday funnies in the newspaper. I just couldn't believe that they could be taken seriously. Still I Rise has changes my view point! If you haven't read a graphic book, this would be a good place to start!

Highly recommended!

Giveaway: THE CRIMES OF PARIS: A True Story of Murder, Theft, and Detection by By Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler

Thanks to Valerie of Hachette Books I am giving away 5 copies of this book.

Book Information:

Turn-of-the-century Paris was the beating heart of a rapidly changing world. Painters, scientists, revolutionaries, poets--all were there. But so, too, were the shadows: Paris was a violent, criminal place, its sinister alleyways the haunts of Apache gangsters and its cafes the gathering places of murderous anarchists. In 1911, it fell victim to perhaps the greatest theft of all time--the taking of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre.

Immediately, Alphonse Bertillon, a detective world-renowned for pioneering crime-scene investigation techniques, was called upon to solve the crime. And quickly the Paris police had a suspect: a young Spanish artist named Pablo Picasso....

Short Story Monday: Jon by George Saunders

Heart Pounding Read

Reminiscent of Margret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Jon is about a group of teenagers raised from infancy, in a building for the purpose of assessing products for consumers. They only see outdoors through a window, never experiencing the wonder of nature first hand.

The story primarily focuses on Jon and Carol. After sneaking into Carol's sleeping quarters " privacy tarp", Carol is pregnant. They marry, even though it is technically not allowed. Carol decided that she wants to leave the safety of the group to go to the unknown, outside. Jon isn't sure.

It is not clear if this story is set in the present day or in the future but it certainly has a futuristic feel to it. Saunders really packs a punch with this story. It is a sad commentary on the emphasis we put on possessions as a society. We are living in a plastic age and this story shows the lengths that some advertisers could go to sell product.

My heart raced as I read this story. If rang true to me, like it could really happen. This is an excellent example of brilliant short story writing!

Highly recommended!

Bookworms Carnival - Edition 23

Edition 23 of the Bookworms Carnival is up at Jessica's The Bluestocking Society. The topic this time round is “literature and film”.

Jessica wants to know "Do you prefer to read the book first or see the movie first?"

I usually prefer to read the book first. However, that often ruins the movie adaptation for me. Most of the time I prefer the book to a movie. I think part of it is that the movie can only represent a small part of a full novel, so I find things that were important to me lacking the movie version.

On the other hand, I have often seen movies that I have loved so much that I then read the book. That usually works pretty well because it don't have the preconceived notion of what the movie should include. There have been a few occasions when I have like the movie better than the book. Those times are rare, but do happen.

What is your opinion? Be sure to visit the Bookworms Carnival, there are some great articles and reviews on this topic, including two book reviews from me. :)

Sway by Zachary Lazar- Giveaway

Thanks to Valerie of Hachette Books I am giving away 5 copies of this book.

Book Information:

Three dramatic and emblematic stories intertwine in Zachary Lazar's extraordinary new novel, SWAY--the early days of the Rolling Stones, including the romantic triangle of Brian Jones, Anita Pallenberg, and Keith Richards; the life of avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger; and the community of Charles Manson and his followers.

Lazar illuminates an hour in American history when rapture found its roots in idolatrous figures and led to unprovoked and inexplicable violence. Connecting all the stories in this novel is Bobby Beausoleil, a beautiful California boy who appeared in an Anger film and eventually joined the Manson "family."

With great artistry, Lazar weaves scenes from these real lives together into a true but heightened reality, making superstars human, giving demons reality, and restoring mythic events to the scale of daily life.

"One hypnotic tone poem.... It is not the now-historic acts of violence that make Sway so riveting, but its vivid character portraits and decadent, muzzy atmosphere, all rendered with the heightened sensory awareness associated with drugs and paranoia.

"The near miniaturist precision with which he describes Keith Richards's attempts to master his guitar, Brian Jones's acid trips and Anger's obsessive desire for Beausoleil bring this large-scale tableau into stunning relief." --Liz Brown, Time Out New York.

Opposing Views of a Post-Racial Society By Roland Laird,Author of Still I Rise: A Graphic History of African Americans

I will be posting my review of this book within the next few days. In the mean time, here is an article by one of the authors, Roland Laird.

After Barack Obama won the presidential election I found myself in conversations with White people who were beside themselves. In their minds the election of a Black president meant that we had truly entered Dr. King's dream and America had become a nation where people are not "judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." Somehow on November 4th we had become a so-called "post-racial society." But my Black friends and I are having none of it. We view the Obama Presidency as promising, but believe racism is alive and well and still a major factor in American life. Now there's no denying that a great deal of people, Black and White, are optimistic about the Obama Presidency. But I believe that the source of the respective optimism comes from different places. For instance, here are two of the many text messages from Black friends that I received soon after Obama was projected as the winner of the election: "Rosa sat so Martin could walk. Martin walked so Obama could run. Obama ran so we can fly." "They didn't want to give us our 40 acres and a mule, so we took 50 states and a White House." I doubt White people were sending those types of text messages to one another on November 4th, and all joking aside both messages speak volumes about the way Black people perceive the "post-racial society."

Meanwhile, I believe the reaction of fair-minded White people to the Obama election falls into one of two categories. Either they think, "Obama represents a new day, and it shows that racism is not a major factor in the everyday lives of Black people." Or they believe that, "Obama's election doesn't mean the end of racism, but it does mean that Blacks and Whites can work more closely together to completely end racial injustice in American Society." Though the first thought is a noble one, it's wildly naive. On the other hand, I believe the second reaction to be an accurate assessment of things -- as long as you take a 500 foot view. Things get messier, however, as you get to ground level.

Historically, from the Abolitionist movement of the 1800's through the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's, there have been significant examples of Blacks and Whites working together to make America a fairer place, but those efforts dealt primarily within the legislative realm. The notion being that once Black people were given the same opportunities as White people, all would be peaches and cream. The Obama Presidency is actually the zenith of this line of thinking. Yet if you go to numerous low-income Black communities today there remain a myriad of problems. The post-racial mindset that the Obama team seems to be projecting is that the problems befalling low-income Black communities needn't be addressed as "race" problems. In his now famous "A More Perfect Union" speech, Obama said, "It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare, and education of black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper."

I believe Obama's speech was designed to be uplifting for the post-racial era and for the purposes of the campaign it was. The problem is it didn't address the fact that Black people and White people have different narratives in America. If as Obama says, we want to invest in the education of black and brown and white children we have to acknowledge that culturally these children may have different needs.

Our book, Still I Rise: A Graphic History of African-Americans is a good primer on the struggles and victories of Black people in America and does so, I believe, without being divisive. In our book we make mention of a gentleman named Carter G. Woodson author of The Mis-Education of The Negro. In this classic book published in 1933, Woodson maintains that Black children in America aren't taught African American (then Negro) history and as such are educated solely in White culture and to be dependent on White people. Now this is arguably an overgeneralization but Woodson's book does resonate with many Black people and his book raises interesting questions. However, in the post-racial era, as posited by some, books like Woodson's or "Breaking the Chains of Psychological Slavery" by Na'im Akbar may be pushed further to the margins because they could be deemed divisive or outdated. After all, "Obama is now President, you can do anything you want" is the post-racial mindset. For me such a mindset is harmful.

A story: my wife Taneshia is the Executive Director of the Trenton Downtown Association and each year TDA celebrates Trenton, New Jersey's storied history as the turning point of the Revolution War with an event called "Patriot's Week". This year, in acknowledgement of the pending Obama presidency, Taneshia commissioned four Black men, all dressed in colonial garb, to read the Declaration of Independence. It was a powerful image especially since at the time of the Revolution just like the rebel colonialists people of African descent also sought independence from their oppressors. It was well received by those in attendance but Taneshia was asked by a covering media reporter, "Why did you choose to emphasize that all the readers were Black?" The reporter followed up by saying that we're in a post-racial society and the Obama election was about our commonalities not our racial differences. To me that demonstrates the paradox of the "post-racial era" thinking. Despite the sincere optimism many White people think it means that when we work together to solve some of societies daunting problems we no longer need to speak explicitly about race. Whereas to many Black people it means we can speak more openly about race and how we can use our experiences and narratives to turnaround many of the problems in our communities.

The next four years should tell us which perspective prevails.

Short Story Monday: A & P by John Updike

Last week, John of Book Mine Set reviewed this story. His review peeked my curiosity. I read one thing by Updike in Jr. High School. I can't even remember what it was and haven't read anything since.

Sammy, the narrator of the story is a 18 year old check-out clerk at A & P Grocery Store. One summer day three teenage girls walk into the store with nothing but bathing suits on. No cover-up and no shoes. As he observes them, as any teenage boy would, he finds it hard to concentrate on ringing out a customer's purchases. Did he ring in the Hi Ho crackers already?

Sammy describes the girls in detail. I could picture how he might tell his friends about what happened. Toward the end of the story the manger comes to Sammy's check out, where the girls end up and tells them that they must be dressed to come into the store. He allows them to make their purchase but is quite insistent that they will not be able to shop there again if they are not fully clothed.

Sammy disagrees with the manager and tells him so after the girls leave. He takes action but also think about the consequences of that action after.

Not a lot happens in this short story but it is quite engaging. This is a really nice coming-of-age story with the theme of consequences to one's choices. I think it is also about anti-establishment. This story was originally written back in the 60's when the younger generation were starting to question the establishment and authority.

A Long Stone's Throw by Alphie McCourt

The youngest of the McCourt brothers.

First there was 'Angela's Ash's and other books by Frank McCourt. Then his brother Malachy with the book "And a Monk Swimming". Now the youngest of the McCourt brothers, Alphie has written a book.

Not many years after his brothers move to New York City from Ireland, Alphie and his mother followed. We hear about his family, this time from Alphie's perspective but much the same as what his brothers describe. Then we hear about his life.
Alphie didn't have the same luck in life as his brothers had. He went from dead-end job to the other throughout his life. He also battled alcoholism. Things looked up for awhile when he owned a restaurant, but that eventually went bankrupt.

He does share one talent with his brother's and that is writing. He shared songs, stories and poems throughout his story, which were enhanced by the audio version of the is book as he sang the songs. Not that he's a great singer, but you get to hear them they way they were meant to be heard. A bit of the books got repetative so it could have used a bit more editing.

Alphie McCourt's story is honest, funny, and sad. I hope his writing is the start in a new and better chapter in his life!

Recommended.
