Themed Reading Challenge 2010- Completed

February 14 – August 14, 2010

Wendy of Caribousmom is hosting the Themed Reading Challenge again in 2010.

The “rules” have changed just a bit from last year. Here they are:
  1. Readers may join at ANY TIME between now and August 14th.
  2. Books should be chosen from the reader’s TBR pile (this may be an actual physical pile or a virtual pile).
  3. The goal is to read AT LEAST 5 books linked by theme.
  4. Overlaps with other challenges are allowed.
  5. Readers may change their list of books OR their theme(s) at any time.
I'm going with level 3, the same theme I used last year.  The three themes I choose are books of historical fiction, that are all written by female authors, and are new to me.

100 Mile Fitness Challenge

January 1 - March 31, 2010

Trish of Trish's Reading Nook is hosting an exercise challenge called the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge.

Here’s how it works:
In order to complete this Challenge, you will need to “travel” 100 miles from January 1st through March 31st.

Here's how you calculate your mileage:
*Running or walking 1 mile outside or on a treadmill equals 1 mile.

*15 minutes of other workouts equals 1 mile (elliptical, swimming, weight lifting, workout video, workout classes, etc.).

A few "workout" stipulations:
“Workouts” only include activities specifically done for the purpose of exercise. Shopping, house cleaning, walking to and from the parking lot, and other day to day activities should not be included.

Partial miles travelled on different days cannot be combined. For example, if you run 1.25 miles on one day, and .75 mile on another day, that does not equal 2 miles. It counts as 1 mile.

Minutes accumulated on two different days cannot be combined. For example, if you workout 10 minutes one day and 5 minutes the next day, that does not combine to equal a mile.

1 mile on the bike or elliptical does not equal 1 mile, etc. Only walking/running is mile for mile.

I just bought a bike trainer so that I can ride my bike in the winter months.  It basically makes your bike into a stationary bike.  The one I got is magnetized and has three different levels to make it more challenging, plus your gears still work with it.   I plan to use it for this challenge.  I may do other things as well.

I just bought in last Thursday.  Using the rule that 15 minutes of biking equals one mile, I have gone a total of 3 miles so far.  LOL! Hey, it's a start!

Pub Challenge 2010-Completed

January 1 - December 31, 2010

Michelle of 1More Chapter is hosting the PUB Challenge again in 2010.

The objective is to read at least 10 books published in 2010.  While I am trying to cut down on the number of ARC's I accept this year, I'm sure I'll get at least 10.

These are the rules:

  1. Read a minimum of 10 books first published in 2010. You don’t have to buy these. Library books, unabridged audios, or ARCs are all acceptable. To qualify as being first published in 2010, it must be the first time that the book is published in your own country. For example, if a book was published in Australia, England, or Canada in 2009, and then published in the USA in 2010, it counts (if you live in the USA). Newly published trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks do not count if there has been a hardcover/trade published before 2010.
  2. No children’s/YA titles allowed, since we’re at the ‘pub.’
  3. At least 5 titles must be fiction.
  4. Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
  5. You can add your titles as you go, and they may be changed at any time.
Here's what I read:

1. The Postmistress by Sarah Blake
2. O, Juliet by Robin Maxwell
3.Our Hart: Elegy for a Concubine by Lloyd Lofthouse
4.The Stolen Crown by Susan Higginbotham
5.The 3-Day Cleanse by Zoe Sakoutis and Erica Huss
6.101 Things I Learned in Culinary School by Louis Eguaras with Matthew Frederick
7. Captivity by Deborah Noyes
8.The Confessions of Catherine de Medici by C.W. Gortner
9.Every Dog Has a Gift by Rachel McPherson
10.Restitution by Kathy Kacer

The Royal Reviews are hosting The Audio Book Challenge in 2010

New Authors Challenge-Completed

January 1 - December 31, 2010

Guidelines:
  1. Since this is an author challenge, there is no restriction on choosing your novels. They can definitely be from other challenges. However, the authors must be new to you and, preferably from novels. Anthologies are a great way to try someone new, but only a third of your new authors can be from anthologies.
  2. I want this to be an easy challenge, so you can pick to do either 15, 25 or 50 new authors. It all depends on how fast you read and how adventurous you want to be. For me, I’m trying another 50 new authors. If you reach your goal halfway through the year, don’t stop. Any new author you try can be added to Mr. Linky. We all want to know about your new experience.
  3. After reading your new author, write your review and then come back and add your link to Mr. Linky. Make sure you include your name and the author.
  4. Bloggers or Non-Bloggers alike are welcome.
I plan to read at least 20 new authors in 2010.  I started a TBR for this challenge below:

1.Sometimes We're Always Real Same-Same by Mattox Roesch
5.Admit One: My Life in Film by Emmett James
6.Book of Fires by Jane Borodale
7.Mistress Shakespeare by Karen Harper
8.The Stolen Crown by Susan Higginbotham
9.The Founding by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles
10.Grease Town by Ann Towell

12. Summer Before the Storm by Gabriele Wills
13.The 3-Day Cleanse by Zoe Sakoutis and Erica Huss
14.The Adventures of Snip in Oregon by Betty S. Moir, Illustrated by Yumi V. Vong
15.Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle
16.101 Things I Learned in Culinary School by Louis Eguaras with Matthew Frederick
18.Captivity by Deborah Noyes
19. Every Dog Has a Gift by Rachel McPherson
20.The Flat on Malabar Hill by Chitra Kallay
21.Restitution by Kathy Kacer
22.A Place for Delta by Melissa Walker
